Nothing really, marketshare is a zero-sum game, and the fact of the matter is that everyone with less marketshare than LG has been trying hard to claw a bit more marketshare with compelling lower-price TV sets.
Samsung's been relatively unaffected since they've had strong brand awareness for a while (and only partially hampered by Note 7 stuff) even across other product markets, like dishwashers, microwaves, etc. There is a distinct set of people that will settle on a brand-favorite for electronics purchases if they feel they have good quality/warranty/value for the price.
Several VIPs withing the company are also in jail for various illegal practices.
Also Samsung have executives in jail for stealing industrial information from LG and beating the company to the market with some inherently LG technologies. The most well-known case is the curved screen, which Samsung literally stole from LG.
I like the way Korean authorities treat these situations unlike the west, allowing companies like Intel act like an organized crime entity.
I find it amazing that Intel was legally found guilty on 3 different continents and was fined, but in the US they were allowed to get away with out of court settlements (although expensive ones ... around 3.8 billion USD paid to AMD and nVIDIA) .
But they're still doing the exact same things unfortunately. Samsung as well.
I have a 2016 LG TV and the 'local dimming' feature is so annoying that I cannot wait to replace the TV. Stuff like that destroys my desire to keep on buying LG.
Hisense is basically sharp. And no matter what sharp says about the quality being “shoddy” that is mostly BS because Hisense kept the same factory in Mexico with the same staff building the same kit they’d been building for the last decade at that factory.
Sony hasn’t made decent tv’s since tube televisions. They are just super behind in consumer flat panel technology.
Sad to see Toshiba go, but they really went 15 years ago when they closed their last Japanese assembly plant and all production moved to China and other third world Asian countries.
The TV market is so cutthroat these days that 4K took less than a year to hit the usual bargain basement prices. Soon HDR will follow 4K in that path if consumers cared, or become the next 3D if they don't.
I think it is a good idea for Toshiba to get out of the TV market. The market has been on a steady decline over the years with tablets and big smart phones slowly taking over their place. I watch a lot of movies, but only do so on my laptop and iPad. Generally people that are working spend a lot of time on the go, so may not have the time to sit in front of the TV.
I remembered reading a paywalled article that the overall TV sales fell to just $100 billion in 2016 from $140 billion in 2015 despite moving more units, so people are actually buying more of them except they are becoming more price-conscious than ever. Besides, as long as you are not a demanding videophile TVs are becoming so cheap now that they are effectively a disposable item.

So what is it that LG are doing wrong to lose market share while Samsung stays flat? It happened in smartphones and now TV's.Also car companies better watch out the Chinese are coming and as smartphones and TV's have shown there is no stopping them.

We've lost SHARP, now Toshiba.
We've lost the modern generation Plasma tech.
