I read AT at work (behind a big telecom company's firewall) during the day.

Since the change I can only get successful pageloads on AT about 1 in 20 tries. Since my browser hasn't changed and the firewall is not blacklisting the site ("Forbidden by rating check"), then some of the new site code must be interpreted as threatening in some manner.

Sorry guys. Now I get blank page after blank page so it's just not worth it anymore. I don't experience this problem with any other site (THG, FS, HOCP, INQ, Blues News, etc).

Love the site. Hope you continue to do well in the future.

i'm about to give up on checking this blog...coming up on a month without an update...

Anand, I'd really appreciate some "CPU run-down, comparison" article. With all these new CPUs and Intel having trouble. Which is the best for me?

It C'ms like your Forums isn't integrating w/ the new WebSite template/layout properly. Pleaz check my newly created Username (TheShniz) 4 error reports.

Yeah, it's about darn time for another blog.

#104: AnandTech generates over 1 Million dollars per year in advertising revenue. I know this becuase I read Anand's interviews at a site that I can't remember the name of anymore. :-(

I think 1 Million dollars are good enough to hire 15 paid editors. Besides, if it wasn't for these 15 paid editors you wouldn't be able to read a new article every single day (it doens't matter if you read every single or not).

I agree that blinking ads are annoying, but I think it is out of Anand's hand to re-do the graphics for the advertisements. Maybe these companies would get more clicks if the graphics are tame and light, BUT apparently blinking graphics = more attention by the reader = more clicks.

    That's how it works. :-(
  • Dasterdly - Sunday, July 25, 2004 - link

If the adds were more intelligent and less "bling bling" then it would be tolerable.
If there are 15 paid editors thats way too many for even annoying ads to pay for.
  • Anonymous - Sunday, July 25, 2004 - link

#101: Deal with it. We all know that AnandTech needs ads to survive. AnandTech probably has 15 different PAID editors and they wouldn't be here if Anand wasn't paying them. You enjoy AnandTech's articles and reviews, so why don't you learn to deal with them.

I am sure your eyes aren't that sensitive that you can't handle a few ads.
  • Anonymous - Sunday, July 25, 2004 - link

I agree with AdamK. As much busy as he may be, he still does one review per week. And if he has time to do a review, he can at leat take 10 minutes off and do a blog post. Maybe inform us that he won't be able to update his blog for a time as he is doing something important.

Chill out man! I know weddings are tough due to the amount of work involved, but just because you have a wedding doens't mean you can't do anything else beside thinking about the wedding.

Think like this - what if had a job where he worked for some company. The company wasn't gonna give him 2 months off just because his wedding is coming up. He may very well had to work till the very last day.

    Chill out man!
  • Dasterdly - Sunday, July 25, 2004 - link

Yes the flashing kiddie adds are very lame, 3 of the exact same zip zoom fly adds is totally lame.
Reminds me of web sites from the early 90's when everyone had animated gifs all over thier sites.

Give me a break; I am still allowed to complain a bit, aren't I? Don't take everything so seriously, Krishna!
  • Krishna - Saturday, July 24, 2004 - link

Isn't Anand getting married soon? Give him a break with the blog updates - I'm sure he's got his hands full gearing up for his wedding. He'll get back to posting new stuff when he's ready.
  • Adam K. - Saturday, July 24, 2004 - link

    Hey Anand!

    No more blogs?

    (:
  • Anonymous - Friday, July 23, 2004 - link

Since you are out of school, I expected many more reviews from you, but how come you only do 1 review per week. I understand that you have to manage AnandTech and all the editors, but at least 3 reviews per week should be good enough.

I hope you don't turn into Tom Pabst (TomsHardware) where all the editors do all the work and you just manage the business side of things.

I am guessing that you must be planning to expand AnandTech is a lot of ways, but it would great if you can please continue with your blog. :-)

#89, The page is a heck of alot smaller than what it used to be, we went from 130K to 40K of html. The only thing that would take time now is ads, and I can't help with that problem :) This site loads at least twice as fast as the old site, and i have benchmarks going up soon in an article we're doing on our transition from our old site to new site.

    Cheers.

If anyone is still reading these, I've noticed an odd problem with the front page. The little blurbs below the titles sometimes cut off in the middle of a sentence. I could understand this if they were just copied from the first sentence of the article, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems that they are written specifically for the front page, but then cut off? I still don't like the design very much, but you do have the best articles. I'm a big fan of the ve3d.com-style layout. Just give me the articles in a big list. Thanks!
  • Anonymous - Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - link

I think it's time for another blog post.
  • Nunya Bizness - Saturday, July 17, 2004 - link

I use to read AT regularly. But no more. Never again.

Why? Right now there are 6 Flash ads on the front page of Anandtech. Screw you and your Flash ads.

  • anand??? - Friday, July 16, 2004 - link

In designing your page, you don't seem to be spending any time at all checking how quickly pages load over a 56K V92 dial-up connection. You should. Check the stats on how many people can't have access to high-speed internet, or for whatever reason choose not to buy it. The longer your page takes to load, the fewer the number of people who will go there.

The last two times you have redesigned your page, it has loaded slower and slower. Soon it won't be worth the trouble.

I have regularly visited your site for about 5 years now, but am doing it less and less frequently.

By the way, I use the Opera browser, version 7.52. Your page ultimately displays fine in this browser, but it is not optimized to load quickly in this browser. Suggest you check your page design with alternative browsers.

  • nick tsingas - Friday, July 16, 2004 - link

    Hey Guys,

So you've managed to clutter up my MOST FAVORITE web site, for no good reason at all.
I guess the old adage is true: Once you reach the top, there is only one way to go; DOWN.
Shame you could not leave a good thing alone.
I don't suppose that you could go back to the old clean (uncluttered) and intuitive layout?
Anyhow, I'd still like to (honestly) thank you for still providing lots of useful information in a relatively organized way.
The layout is just not as clean as before, the content however, is just fine.
    Thanks again.
  • Petter Klasson - Friday, July 16, 2004 - link

Oh, i was wrong about it not fit 1024 maximized, i must run like 970px in width when not running maximized. I would guess most dont run over 1000px if they run none maximized though. But it fits what its suppose to (1024 maximized) great.
  • Petter Klasson - Friday, July 16, 2004 - link

Great work with the site, but why have a width that doesn't fit in 1024x768 maximized. 1002px width is too much, a maximized 1024 would be around 955px in width. I don't run 1024x768, but i keep my browsersize to about the same size as a maximized 1024. It's a bit annoying, like vr-zones site that don't fit properly in 1024x768 either.
It's great that you move to more standardlized html as using divs and css, but why keep running html 4.01 then (Where it's acceptable to have layout in the HTML)? Is there a problem with .NET to run XHTML? Otherwise there would be no problem to run atleast XTHML 1.0 Transitional and no reason not to.

It looks just great otherwise, i hope the new system runs nice for you guys.

    Regards
  • Jerome - Friday, July 16, 2004 - link

Logically laid out design. Love the articles. One thing I have hated about your site for a long time however are the flash ads splattered all over your pages. They generate far too much visual clutter. Can you not find another way of advertising without invoking epilepsy in your readers?

Oh, and there are *quite* a few people that put their passwords in the email field...think it'd tip them off when it's not masked

Yall might want to make sure it is correct format for email (e.g. contains '@' and '.')...that would solve the problem.

  • nowayout99 - Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - link

Another thing that's becoming annoying now... the teasers on the front page don't complete coherent thoughts.

"You knew it was coming, and indeed it has. Today, we bring you a Shuttle SFF review as part of our effort to b.."

"Let's face it - many of us understand networking, but neither have the time, know how nor the patience to se.."

I'd just like to mention that I had simmilar problems to 46 and 31 using Mozilla 1.3 in Red Hat, although mine seems to look even worse than #31's snapshot. Its claiming the atlogo.gif file has an error, so I can't even see the title bar.

    .....

And I just reloaded the thing to double check annother error and it came up like it should with no missing pieces (except the flash that I have intentionally turned off).

Now that I can actually _see_ the new site, it looks like a positive change.
  • NooN - Monday, July 12, 2004 - link

Hmm... the white background last thing still hasn't changed. That's ugly and bad, really really bad...
  • Anonymous - Sunday, July 11, 2004 - link

The new look is great but ahh guys... its not what i'd call "Standards compliant". Sure the page only has 398 errors, but you guys are seen as role models and being half arsed on the sites code reflects badly on you. Come on, Im sure with all your knowledge you should be able to make a nice compliant XHTML 1.1 Strict website with CSS2 to keep it looking good.

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww...

I really do like the new look and you are simply the best in the business, but please make it a little less 1999 and a little more 2004 :).

(This sounds far worse than I ment it so please dont take offense)
  • Adam K. - Saturday, July 10, 2004 - link

    Anand,

Yep, the site looks much better now, I must admit.

BUT I am really exited to see some Mac articles. Perhaps you could provide us with some information about the new G5 architecture? What about the laptop G5 powerbook? Is it ever going to come?
  • nowayout99 - Saturday, July 10, 2004 - link

The name/email fields are in contrast to the News feedback function, which requires a password. And some folks *might* be accidentally entering their passwords in the email fields of these blogs. I tried mentioning it to Jason in private as a potential security risk, but never heard back.
  • Laoii - Saturday, July 10, 2004 - link

Well it certaintly looks mch prettier, but I really miss being able to just go to the site and have easy access to news/reviews. Right now the latest news link displays just todays new, and if you click the month it displays it from the first to the current date... opposite of what I want :) Maybe a add a "last weeks news" link? Anyway, like most of the changes anyway.
  • Merid - Saturday, July 10, 2004 - link

Whats the deal with the 'value graph'? whats its suppose to mean or represtent? where do you get the numbers from?
  • Brandon Hill - Saturday, July 10, 2004 - link

I will be looking into this, but I don't a password feature is really required as Anand asks for everyone's opinion. Besides, as $65 suggested this isn't really the main part of the site, which is why we decided not to put the password lock.
  • Anonymous - Saturday, July 10, 2004 - link

since anand has had a blog here, there hasn't been a password required for it ... its not a product of the new site design ... thats just how it is.
  • PureSkill - Friday, July 9, 2004 - link

One thing i did notice I do is that I just hit the news tab on the front page forgeting that is where the latest reviews are listed.
  • Tim - Friday, July 9, 2004 - link

  • rawr - Friday, July 9, 2004 - link

I liek the new layout. It is easy to navigate. As for the reviews, keep up the good work!
  • Blubberboy - Friday, July 9, 2004 - link

  • Oxonium - Friday, July 9, 2004 - link

After checking out the revised site a little more closely, the Anand's Blog section seems to be the only section that DOESN'T require a password to comment. That's a little odd.

I've mentioned this twice now, and while I understand that you guys are still busy tweaking the site, this is a rather important issue. • Bird Dog - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

Good gravy, THANK YOU for changing it back so the white background loads first - I was really getting annoyed reading black-on-grey as the page loaded! Now, if you would only consider (just for a moment) that nine ads on the front page is perhaps excessive, and that Tufte would weep at the amount of wasted space due to the lack of a proper UI designer addressing oh maybe things like rows of big ugly nav tabs for starters? Still, I don't want to sound ungreatful - the background-load thing was a BIG step in the right (i.e. user-centric) direction.
  • Anonymous - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

I also like Anand's blog and visit it 10 times a day to check for new stuff, but I still want News on the top. I think it looks professional to have all the important stuff on the top, while keeping the little personal stuff at the bottom.
  • Netopia - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

I've quickly gotten used to everything and was quite excited about one thing in particular...which has now been removed! :(

I liked the way that you had "Anand's Blog" at the very top of the right hand column with the last couple of topics listed. Way back in the day, one of the things that truly endeared me to AnandTech was the daily stories of your life... school, girlfriend, friends, testing equipment... With the blog right there at the top, I was sure to hit it all the time.

I thought it had been removed, but you just demoted it TO THE BOTTOM! I vote for the blog being back at the top right again!

    Hi,

I am using Mozilla Firefox Version 0.8 on RedHat Linux 9 and I am having very similar problems to reader50 (#31 & 35). If you want a screenshot, please email me and I will send it along. The rendering is wrong for all pages EXCEPT the print article page. Then it appears to be rendered correctly.

  • NooN - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

The re-design was a good idea, and looks quite good to me. However, there's still a problem with Mozilla, and partially also with IE: the white background color only appears after a whole page loaded. I think I've read in the old comments, that this was a CSS related issue, and you can't fix it. However, doing web design for my own, I can assure you that there MUST be a fix for this, simply because I have never seen such a strange thing like this yet. Seems like you use some kind of uncommon method.
So keep up the good work, but please fix this issue!
  • Brad - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

I love your new looking site! I have a request to make from you. Is it possible to add and look at your blog archive way back when you first started your hardware web page?

Again, I love your new site!

  • tfranzese - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

Oh, forgot to say, great job on the response and tweaks to feedback ;)

I definately like where things are heading, now if only we could do away with the repeat ads - at least make'em different?
  • Cliff - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

Great job on the tweaks...yall are awesome for listening and responding to everyone.

If you could just reduce the ads...it is waaay too distracting. I don't want to kill flash all together, but it's way too busy and takes away from the overall appeal of the front page (and is especially annoying when reading articles).

I'm a new convert to Firefox...anyone point me to the ad blocker pls?..

on that same note, thanks for fixing the comments popup window so we don't have to side scroll.
  • tfranzese - Thursday, July 8, 2004 - link

#37, CSS2 is hardly the standard yet. It will be a standard when it is functional enough and standard accross the popular browsers. Go to http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_reference.asp

Notice all the CSS2 properties still unsupported? Yeah, some of us would love to take advantage of them if only browsers would.
  • nourdmrolnmt1 - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

ooooo new issue. you guys have a SINGLE pixel of blue showing behind the navigation tabs on the far left of the bottom row.

sorry, im nitpicking, but that can be seen sometimes.

    MIKE
  • Jeff7181 - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Would it be possible to do away with the animated ads? I know they're more eye catching than just still images... but they tend to bog down my old laptop, which spends a large part of it's time on AnandTech pages.
  • nourdmrolnmt1 - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

well it looks like you guys listened to me and changed that back image a bit so it doesnt look as pixelated. and same with SOURCE.

    it looks MUCH better.

one more thing. now there is a HUGE spave between anand's picks and his blog. not sure if that is just because of the amount of articles in each or what.

  • Guspaz - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

#35, I hate to be harsh, but get a real browser.

CSS2 is a standard, supported by all decent quality browsers. Anandtech's site renders perfectly fine in a myriad of browsers.

If your browser doesn't support CSS2, sorry, it doens't even qualify as a browser by my definition. You're asking Anandtech to completely re-write the site just so it loads in a wannabe-browser that can't handle a standard web page? That's asking a bit much.

Looks like you're using MacOS X. I reccomend Mozilla Firefox, or perhaps Mozilla Camino or Apple Safari. All are good browsers that will render Anandtech just fine. Personally I use Firefox and am quite happy with it.
  • dvinnen - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

    gj yall.

Looks alot better now, like it more than the old site now. Plus you fixed the comments bug I brought up. Thanks.
  • reader50 - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Addendum, the broken Mac section link is not in the nav tabs at the top, it is the link in the "AnandTech Product Coverage" box a ways down the page.

I'd still like to see AnandTech look good in my browser, perhaps you can at least limit the use of CSS2? My browser is highly customized to my use patterns and is unlikely to change for one site.

Another alternative is to offer an alternate URL, many news sites do that for a "Headlines" version.
  • Jason Clark - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

    #31 - reader50

Css is an industry standard, and will only be used more and more as the days go by. I suggest using a better browser we support all the populate browsers. Mozilla/Netscape, IE, Opera, Safari. I have no idea why you would want more to download, but the css version is 1/8th the size of the html version of the site.

We are definitely not reverting from css to html for slower rendering and high page times (not good for anyone).

    Cheers
  • Da3dalus - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Great work, you've fixed almost everything I disliked :)

The one minor thing still left is the reviews. Would be better to rename Reviews to Articles because not everything there are reviews. Article seems like a more appropriate description ;)

Very nice, guys. Thanks for listening! We knew you would!
  • reader50 - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Suggestion, more HTML and less CSS. The old version rendered ok in iCab, but the new version requires a lot of scrolling... (288 KB)

    http://members.dslextreme.com/~readeraway/anandtec...

I know, I know. Standard advice, join the sheep and use (insert fav browser). Might I point out that like other businesses, AnandTech is presumably supported by views and clicks. The more customers that are locked out using their favorite browser, presumably the fewer views and clicks, and the less money. Money is nice, perhaps nice enough to make it worth the trouble to reduce the CSS.

Site bug, link for the Mac section tries to reach "/macintosh" which is a 404. That section is currently defined as "/mac" if you want to reach the page.

  • Pollock - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

It's better, but I still think the "More Reviews" part should be removed to allow "Latest Reviews" to span the entire width of the middle table. That should help aleviate some of the scrolling and loading problems, too.

Also, only 3 of the 7(?) ads show up for me, and those 3 are all exact same.

    tabs are better
    news placement is much better
menu rollovers are nice - underline not really necessary (dual indicators)

    Much, much better!

I would really like to see a user option for color scheme like a few site versions ago. Personnally I don't care for the blue.

Also, spilling into content, I would really like a stronger emphasis on daily news. Taking the next step beyond clipping service.

Otherwise, keep up the great work!

#20 3. The image I was referring too was on the left of the AnadTech Logo not on the right as I stated previously. The "windmill swirl pattern" was the image that was looking “pixelated” and did not suit the clearly defined and sharp design of the rest of the AnandTech site. A detailed sharp background designed image to enhance the look of the AnandTech Logo would enhance the professional design and appearance of the AnandTech site.

    Sorry for the confusion Jason.

Thanks guys, we're trying to address what we can.

    1) can't its an adspace, the deal finder is an ad, and can be replaced with a block ad at any time.

    2) that isnt up to me, but passed on.

    3. There is no pixilation, if there is its your browser caching an old logo. The text beside the logo is NOT aliased at all.

    4. Don't think that will happen for real-estate reasons.

    5. Can't do that either thats a marquee zone, large 728x100 banners can appear, and will.

    Cheers

Well done on the fast update Jason, it is looking much better.

    Suggestions:

    1. Move the AT Deal Finder to below Anand's Pick as this seems more logical and also does not intrude on the latest news section when I scan over it.

    2. Move the top advertisement located in the AnandTech Product Coverage as this also intrudes or atleast balance the text located between the advertisements for example CPU, Chipset, Motherboards, and Video above first advertisement then Storage, Memory, Displays Linux, and Mac followed by the final advertisement.

    3. The pixelated image located to the right of the AnandTech Logo really diminishes the professional presentation of the page and website, seriously consider a detailed image as background for the AnandTech Logo, as at the moment it is a little plain.

    4. The width of the Latest Reviews Picture Boxes should be increased in width as the current images are hard to determine what piece of hardware/article they represent. Also please preserve the orange article description and date on the same line under More Reviews to match those under the Latest Reviews as there is no continuity to its current location and detracts from its presentation. Also consider also adding these orange tags to the articles listed under Top Insider Stories to once again add continuity to the articles located in the Main Box section.

    5. The light blue advertisement boxes located at the top and bottom should not be larger then the Anandtech Logo Box at the top as this detracts from brand recognition as the emphasis of the site is on advertisements and not on Anandtech Brand. Also the light blue of the boxes seems out of place with the colour grouping of the website. You should preserve the deep blue, orange and cream colour grouping and thus if you want to draw the focus to the advertisement then you should probably have a light orange in combination with the smaller height of the Advertisement Box, with the height corresponding to the width of the left Contents Box. Thus the bottom Advertisement Box should also conform to the standard of the top Advertisement Box.

you've addressed all my issues, thanks for listening.

Excellent work with the update! :) Now the news needs to scroll in one window and everything will be fine.
  • Oxonium - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

The page is getting a lot better Jason, so keep up the good work. I noticed this morning that the AT DealFinder is in the middle of the News headlines on the RHS, which seems out of place. I'm still curious about the password issue I mentioned earlier for posting in the comments section. How are you keeping people from posting under another's username (other than Anonymous) without requiring passwords?
  • Jason Clark - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

I'm aware of the comment issue, its on a hit list, just a little lower down in priority.

    Cheers

Still having horizontal scrolling problems in the comments section (this page, for example) in Mozilla 1.7.

The other changes are big improvements, though; keep up the good work! :-)

I'm wondering, is there a place anywhere that shows all the past designs that Anandtech has gone through over time? I think a history page like that would be cool.
  • justbrowzing - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Kudos for the solid improvements & very fast response. The homepage is much much better.

BUT there is still far too much advertising: the homepage looks like Times Square. And now there are moonwalking pop-ups when you link to articles! That is just appallingly intrusive, sorry to say, and MUST go. Now I wonder if some online casino ad will assault me after every mouse click.

Please work on the scrolling problem; not all of us have huge monitors. I'd far prefer to lose the leftside band than the right, which carries headlines; so i'm scrolling all the time, which is tiresome. Is there a way to align the default left edge of the screen for low-resolution monitors with the left edge of the main text block?

A minor quibble: your fading blue header bands bleach far too much to white at the edges, though the new blue is gutsier & better.

Keep at it! You're over the hump.

    #10: oops -> heigth was meant ;)
  • mino - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Actually this change overnight is a bit of an improvement.

One big thing: -as #4 wrote allready-

2 banners in product section is TOO much. one is OK. It will also allow to fit the high of that section to one screen on lower res.

    Congratz to fast responses yesterday.

Very good job. Love the product coverage in its current form, don't change that. Article layout is also very good.

I agree that the price guides aren't really reviews and should probably get their own little section. It's not normally something I look at unless I'm in the market.

Great work, and I look forward to "Behind Anandtech" article on the site. We're getting ready to shift from ASP to .NET on our company site and would love to read some comments, gripes, tips and tricks and the like from someone who just renovated a medium-sized site. I know it's not scheduled, but how about a guesstimate? Three weeks or two months?

Haha, #6 looks like a complete idiot after post #7. That's what troll posters get! LOL!
  • Anonymous - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Mike, you can scan through all the news on a single page by simply clicking the news link. That is, simply click the "Latest News" link at the top and you'll be taken to a full page of news without any more clicking to do.
  • Anonymous - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

it STILL sucks. when i read news on AT (which i often do), i don't want to open 20 new browser windows, one for each entry (with some potentially having hundreds of comments i'm not interested in).
  • Mike Barton - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Better... Still would like to have a summary pop up for the text titles to help decide if it is something I want to read without navigating. Also would like the news to be listed on one page like it was on the old site (but doesn't have to be on the front page). It was easier to scan through that way.
But in all, a good job & the speed improvement is worth it.
    A BIG Thanks!

    Changes:

5 latest reviews, much better now, but u should increase image size.

Logo is just a little bit better, u can improve that.

Remove brands and 1 add banner from anandtech product coverage.

Add PSU prices to realtime pricing.

More water cooling tests ( rad, pump, block, fans, etc.)

Keep up the good work :)

I liked the new design before but now I really like it! Great work!
  • Anonymous - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Yep, thanks for changing the design so quickly. Much better... :-)
  • dmann - Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - link

Good work guys, it's much easier to find stuff and the site sure loads faster. Maybe you could give price and buyers guide similar place as insider stories, right now they take two of the three top review spots and they aren't really reviews.
