If this crashes tomorrow, I'm going to be quite sad. I don't relish having to use a competing live blog like The Verge. I'd much rather hear Anand and/or Brian's first reaction(s) than someone from The Verge, Engadget, etc. I would say Ars is a good alternative, but they don't have the best track record for stability during these things. I'm sure Anand knew what he was doing when he decided to live blog this, so I'm sure there are precautions in place to prevent such an occurrence. I'm still worried, though.

P.S. How many hours of sleep is Brian running on? He didn't get on a flight to SFO until 10 PST. That'll make today fun for him haha.

so far this launch is ifail IMO

while overall an upgrade, there is nothing in the ip5 that wasnt already known, and most of the features have been out for over a year on the android side. The only thing really nice is going to be the processor in the new iphone, i suspect its a cortex A15 beast.

    ifails:

-no thunderbolt or usb3 sync, yet another proprietary format. Why?
-ipod nano is a step backwards, should have stayed with old design and added BT, GPS, Wifi and made waterproof
-iphone 5 design aesthetics questionable, not necessarily an improvement
-same camera and storage (saving this upgrade for 5S, u think we are stupid apple?)
-different color shuffle? OMG are u serious?
-most upgrades coming from iOS 6, so why upgrade?
    -no NFC support
-new form factor while thinner and lighter, not necessarily more compact.

the new touch looks to be more of a winner than everything else, then you look at the price.

    LOLZ

This design basically means 2 years stifled innovation from apple..cuz the 5S is just going to be more memory and a camera...MAYBE NFC... but to do NFC, they need to change the back of the phone..so not likely.

Watch out APPLE youve left a crack for your competitors to squeeze in.

The solid plus im seeing here is the itunes revamp, but well have to wait and see it could be slower than ever.
  • vol7ron - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

I'm not so sure it was a fail. The phone is much thinner, faster, has a longer battery life, and support for many different frequencies (finally including LTE).

My question is, can you take the same phone from one carrier to another? Is all their support integrated into the same chip, or is it specialized, based on the phone you buy for a particular carrier?

As they stated, they like the way the current design is. They like the width, so they purposely tried not to change that. The phone is much thinner, so it's not the -same- camera. Also, changes in devices these days aren't going to be as impressive as they once were. We're hitting a limit in marginal returns, so either your expectations have to change, or your impression will remain constant (dissatisfied).

There are really only two things that would make this a better hardware upgrade:
    1) Infrared support (to use a TV remote)
    2) Pico projector (to increase visual viewing size)

But just because they can do those things now, it doesn't mean they should. It's a business and they have to plan for the future.

For me, the current decision is do you upgrade to Apple 5, HTC OneX, or wait for the next Nexus (most likely Google-Motorola)? I think Apple has enough in this release to be a deserving upgrade (unlike the 4S), but it ultimately comes down to personal preference.
  • vol7ron - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

    Update:
    1) I read somewhere else that the Lightning is compatible with Thunderbolt - even though the blog above doesn't state it, it would justify the similarities in the name
    2) There's also the Windows products coming out.
  • dsumanik - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

I dunno, the 5 icon rows looks too tall, how do you reach your thumb up top?

The phone is now two handed use.

A far more impressive feat would have been to simply fit the new display in the old chassis and lose the physical home button for good.
  • robinthakur - Thursday, September 13, 2012 - link

Disagree actually. Apple need to kill off the leaks from the factories as they spoil the announcements quite drastically, a bit like opening your christmas presents before the big day.

I think the end product is impressive enough to fill the void left by my old Samsung Galaxy S 3 and ably replace the 4S and feel like an upgrade. All new features are supremely usable, not just put in for the sake of a bullet point list like Samsung's pointless features like motion controls and photoshare.

They remind me of how phone companies used to operate when they ruled the roost before the iPhone. Pointless features you might use once and then never again.

The hardware looks really well made also, not some shoddy thin plastic masquerading as a flagship device. The Home button on my Galaxy 3 was starting to wobble after only 3 weeks of use.

Apple is all about Software and Hardware working together and this together with the new iTunes will be very exciting to use. Most importantly, this works with my iPad, and Hackintosh OSX box and the iCloud mean you don't need to worry about devices not being in sync, everything just works!

  • dishayu - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

So, no one from Anandtech will cover the activities over at IDF today? That's a shame.
  • SorinN - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

I'm sad to say this, but I don't like this new direction AnandTech is taking. I was used to seeing really in-depth, high quality coverage coming from you guys, but now things have pretty much migrated towards quantity.

I know that if you would like to make lots of money on the Web you need to have as much content as possible, but posting articles like this isn't OK in my view. You should have waited for the event to start before publishing this.

I guess that I have to get used to the idea that my favorite hardware website is turning into a lightweight blog where SEO is king.
  • bupkus - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

02:28PM - And we're done! We'll be working on a deeper Haswell architecture piece over the next couple of days.
  • dishayu - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

What exactly do you expect in realtime? Day 1 of the conferece finished a few hours ago and you want in depth analysis and insights already? Give them some time before talking bullshit.
  • SorinN - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

I wasn't talking about Haswell, but about this iPhone 5 live blog. The Apple event hasn't even started and the article is already up, which is wrong IMO.

This is the sort of stuff that I was expecting from BGR, not from AnandTech.
  • nevertell - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

Have other people been using your head for a certain kind of intercourse ?

How making a blog post about an upcoming event is wrong ?
They are just making sure more people know about them doing a live blog from the event.

They still deliver quality content regardless of posting liveblogs from different events.
  • bupkus - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

"I wasn't talking about Haswell, but about this iPhone 5 live blog."

You were speaking of---correction---describing a general decay of the Anandtech reporting model and mission.

In the first of your 3 paragraphs you accuse AT of sacrificing quality for quantity.
Your second paragraph speaks of AT as newly directed towards financial gain while forgetting the goal of quality, content driven articles/reports.
Your 3rd paragraph portrays you as a sorrowful soul facing AT's inevitable decline into crass commercialism.

Why is your focus now only limited to iPhone 5 when you were clearly criticizing Anand for his efforts to serve those who like a real-time experience.
This is not an effort to replace good articles for real-time reporting.

My above post was a simple way for me to show you that even though the Haswell report was done (as a test of the real-time tech) there was at the end a promise to follow up with an article about Haswell in greater depth. This should have been enough, considering who Anand is and has been in the past with us, to allow some room for trust in his personal character.

That would guarantee that almost all followers are late. It's like not telling people when a TV show starts so they have to stumble on it and watch from where ever they stumbled in. Actually, it's worse because they wouldn't even know that the show was coming.

I think the concept of "live" is lost on you.

Does Anand cover much of anything NOT Apple related anymore? It seems like I only ever see his name on Apple posts and reviews and that's sad considering where this site comes from. Very lame.
  • jeremyshaw - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

Anandtech posts prudently. They don't rush to post every gasp and fart a manufacturer makes (engadget), nor do they only post an analysis every quarter or so (realworldtech).

Honestly, just looking down the first page of Anandtech alone, I don't see your point at all.
  • jeremyshaw - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

The last mac product review (MBP 2012) didn't even have his name in it...

I'm still suprised you don't see the patern, yet. At three pages in, certain reviewers seem to cover certain subjects more frequently. Anand's name seems to be on half of the storage device reviews so far.
  • Kristian Vättö - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

I think it's quite obvious that every editor concentrates on one or two main subjects. It would be a total mess if everyone covered a bit of everything because it would be much harder to compare products (especially ones with physical impressions). We also run plenty of in-house tests (some may be for future use) and there would be unnecessary overhead if for example I had to work with multiple editors to get the results I need (there's already enough with Anand, haha).

Anand still covers many areas (storage, tablets, CPUs, etc.) but instead of covering every single release, he often picks the biggest ones where his expertise is the most needed (for example, he covered OCZ Vertex 4 but I got Agility 4).
  • repoman27 - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

Well, Anandtech gets 10x as many hits on the Apple related articles because of trolls like you posting asinine comments like this.

Go ahead and count the number of posts he's made recently until you find one that is actually about an Apple product. He was at IDF yesterday (not really Apple related), check out the news section and quit yer whining.

Did you really think he would not go to Apple's media event for the iPhone 5? Maybe just toss his invite in the trash? Or maybe he'd go but not mention anything about it here?

Anand's coverage and analysis will be much better and professional compared to other so called "tech" websites.. one of them just put up an article titled "Just one hour to go until Apple's launch event, here's the scene in SFO". Seriously ? What next ? 30 minutes to go ?
  • Pressurge - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

As long as he doesn't gloss over any shortcomings and actually provides unbiased reporting on the announcement (which is probably asking too much since most of the Apple reviews here never bring up any flaws and only mound up huge amounts of praise constantly...)
  • melgross - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

    Stop being an ass.
  • KoolAidMan1 - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

His reviews are very well balanced and always bring up issues. I understand that overwhelming negativity is what many angry nerds would like to see in a review of an Apple product, but that wouldn't be unbiased without real justification, would it?

So the A6 is confirmed to be 2x Cortex A15 or is that just speculative? Any word on the gpu side?
  • Lucian Armasu - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

Probably just speculative. The iPhone 5 may just have a dual core 1.6 Ghz Cortex A9 CPU. Didn't iPhone 4S have only a 800 Mhz dual core A9 CPU? I know iPhone 4 did.
  • Lucian Armasu - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

Or better yet, it may be a quad core Cortex A9 design, like Exynos 4 and Tegra 3. Either variant seems a lot more likely than A6 using Cortex A15. Not sure why Anand jumped straight to that conclusion, when we haven't even seen A15 in tablets yet.
  • lukarak - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

But the battery life wouldn't be nowhere as close, even if we take into account Apple's PR 'generosity'.

1136x640? That's one oddball resolution. Can't even do a 1280x720 when other Android vendors already did to their products?

    Excellent event.

Does the A6 SoC have a low power low performance companion core to handle functions when the two A-15 Cortex cores are in sleep mode? [The way the OMAP 5 has two low power low performance Cortex M-4 cores?]

What do we know about the A6 graphics?

Do we have confirmation that all A6 SoCs will be manufactured at Samsung at 28 nm etch?

Anand and Brian, please give us the specs on the A6 SoC soon. :-p

    --Single precision gigaflops
    --Max wattage TDP
    --triangles per second
    --idle power wattage
--megapixel cameras supported from the back and the front by the new SoC (even though the i-phone 5 does not utilize this full capacity)
    --other metrics of SoC performance

Thanks again for your very fine live blog. Please note that the function of auto updating sometimes malfunctions (maybe because of overloads from too many refreshes). Because of this, it is best to keep refreshing the browser to get the latest live blog entries.

Hearing the pricing schedule it is really odd that Apple's continues to sell a few GB of NAND in an integrated package for such inflated prices. In the SSD space 16 Gb of NAND is < $16 and 32 GB of NAND is < $32

It is about time that phone makers think of other added features for higher price points or at least add NAND in quantities that reasonably reflect the added cost. For example base model 16GB +$100 = $64 GB +$200 = $128GB.
  • MantasPakenas - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

    This. It's getting pretty ridiculous.

On the other hand, I wouldn't expect this push to come from Apple. It could be that the price elasticity of the customers buying the most expensive models is near 0, which means they have to get the most expensive model no matter what. If that's the case, it would be really bad business decision for them not to charge what they can. Also, this helps keep prices stable, which is desirable from a marketing point of view.

Btw, I don't expect a material share of iPhone owners hitting storage limits on their 64GB models :)
  • edsib1 - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

The A6 CPU is probably a dualcore 1.2Ghz cortex a-15

The A15 is about 40% more efficient than the A9, and increasing the speed from 800Mhz up to 1.2Ghz would give you about x2 performance.
  • Wilco1 - Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - link

At 1.2GHz an A15 would make no sense when a 1.6GHz dual or 0.8GHz quad A9 would work just as well. The A15 provides high performance: OMAP 5 runs at 2.0GHz - well beyond what you'd need for a phone today. It's much more likely A15 debuts in tablets first, and then moves into phones (with A7 cores in big/little configuration to get low power).

    I loved the comment above....

"11:43AM PDT - I'm almost as excited about the Foo Fighters as I was about the A6"

I think the really sad part is, this really shows what was interesting about this event. Foo Fighters was probably more exciting than the actual release of the phone itself. From a tech standpoint, it's more of the "Same old same old product". Ok, it might have an "A6 processor", but for all we know it could be a slightly tweaked A5 with the LTE functionality added. I can't really say I'm all that impressed.

All I can really see, is that Apple is now playing catchup again, just like they did 2 decades ago. If they don't start catching up, the same will happen all over again. And while I absolutely hate Apple, I would hate to see the innovation that started the Iphone craze go away. Unfortunately, I fear it already has.
  • doobydoo - Thursday, September 13, 2012 - link

If 'slightly tweaked' means double the CPU and GPU performance (the latter of which they were already dominating the benchmarks for) I'm all for it!

Making the device so thin and with such classy industrial design is unique too - given the abundance of plastic on Android phones.
