I have a few systems, this would match most closely with my need to upgrade my Core I5 2500K 3.3 Ghz machine with a 5xxxx series GPU. I would then move the 5xxx GPU into my HTPC which is sporting a Radeon 4350 fanless gpu which does not allow me to play games on the HTPC.

    ASUS P5Q Pro Core2Duo E8500

My current desktop configuration is a Core i5 2500k with an AMD Radeon 3850. I do moderate gaming with turn based strategy games like Civ or racing games like Grid 2 and the old Radeon is having a tough time keeping up to the full 1900x1200 resolution of my monitor. I do also have power concerns as I have a 430W power supply and don't want to spend even more upgrading the power supply as well. A moderate card with a good power envelope like the R7 250 would be a good fit for my situation. Thank you.
  • extide - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

You would actually be fine running all but the very top end cards. Even a 280X would be fine on that psu.

I have an aging HD 4830 in my main desktop rig, and I really could use an upgrade to something modern! I like the idea of a low power, efficient graphics card that will allow me to game on my modest monitor, and the R7 250 would be perfect as I only put AMD graphics in my machines!
  • capawesome9870 - Wednesday, March 5, 2014 - link

  • MrCommunistGen - Wednesday, March 5, 2014 - link

I'm currently running my HTPC with a Phenom II X4 940 (cannibalized from my previous gaming rig) utilizing the motherboard graphics from the 785G chipset. Until recently I was using a passively cooled HD4650 but the card recently burned out and I was forced to revert to the onboard motherboard graphics.

I watch local content through XBMC and also stream through Netflix and Amazon. Now that the system is running with onboard graphics it just isn't quite fast enough to provide a seamless viewing experience. Playback stutters at least a little on most HD content, but when watching Amazon's higher bitrate HD streams it becomes unwatchable.

With the addition of a Radeon R7 250 I'd once again have a powerful enough hardware video decode system to fully enjoy my HTPC again.

I've got a budget desktop with an AMD APU (A8-5600K) and no video card. Now and then I take some time to game, but on more resource intensive games, I can't play on more than the low to mid settings. I'd really like to have a video card to fill the missing part of my build, and generally make using my computer more enjoyable.

This would be great for my system that uses the Intel imbeded video in the 2500k processor. This system is not only my computer, but my television with a 24" screen, and a my DVR with HD Homerun tuners. The 24 inch screen is a little demanding on the Intel 3000 gpu especially with blu-ray discs.

I am working on a new min-ITX build. Although this wouldn't be a major upgrade from my current GPU, it does generate significantly less heat and that is important when going with a smaller build.

    Current Build
    AMD Athlon II X4 630 @ 3.4Ghz
    16 GB DDR3-1600 Mhz RAM
AMD Radeon 6670 w/1 GB GPU
...and an SSD with a couple HDD
  • slinkyb - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I'm still using a geforce 7 era card, which means for the latest titles, I won't be able to play at an acceptable framerate even at lowest settings. The R7 250 would come in handy because it would be able to handle these newer titles at reasonable settings while having a power requirement that my PSU would be able to handle.

  • jensend - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

My current setup is a small form factor system with a 65W Trinity A6, no discrete graphics, and a low-wattage PSU.

I'd be interested in better graphics for gaming, but any GPU which requires an additional power connector is out of the question- my PSU doesn't provide such a connector, the 12V amperage would exceed what the PSU is capable of, and even if I replaced the PSU with a 350W+ SFX unit, cooling the PSU and the card would push the thermal limitations of the case.

The R7 250 is low-wattage enough and cool enough to work in this system, and the upgrade would make a large difference for gaming (from the benchmarks I see, it looks like the R7 250 is a little over 3x as fast).

Later this year I might replace my current motherboard and CPU and get the A8-7600. If I do that, using the R7 250 for dual graphics could give me a further boost.

I would like to use this as a replacement for my failing gtx460. My system has an AMD 1090t @ 3.5 GHz with 8gb ram. I hope that with the lower power draw of the R7 250, I will be able to push the overclock on my cpu further due to less gpu heat being dumped into my case. I'm sure the R7 250 will be fast enough to run most of the games I enjoy, especially since I only use one 1920x1200 monitor for gaming. The lower power consumption should also save a bit on my electricity bill, as my pc is on 24/7 and running distributed computing projects when I'm not actively using it. I would be interested to see how the R7 250 does for gpu compute.

I have an out of date desktop that's no longer in use that I would like to transition to a living room environment primarily for Steam use. I've moved to my laptop for everything, but have found that even with the HD4600 I've got in this thing I enjoy the big picture mode and enjoying a broader set of what PC gaming has to offer. This card would certainly help put that plan into motion, but regardless I've been toying with the idea of jumping on Kaveri and seeing how that handles things (720p hasn't left me wanting on my laptop, but that might be more difficult to swallow on the TV).
  • franzeal - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

And when I say out of date desktop, I'm referring to a system that I once had a Radeon X700 in with a Q6600, upgraded to a Radeon 5670 (or something, paid $100 or something for it at the time) that I've since downgraded to a 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo since I've stopped using the machine for anything except data storage. That and I stole the SSD I was using as a primary to put into my laptop.

I think I would like just a little bit more GPU power though, and I really like the idea of dual graphics, so an R7 250 would be a perfect fit!

awesome! I'm still in need of a vid card for my all around machine: an i5 4670 8GB on an asus z87 Plus. I'm also still missing a PSU so *if* I win that enables me to save not only on the gfx, but also on a lower watt psu as well. All I want for gaming is Starcraft 2, so this is perfect! $ saved will go towards a nice samsung evo SSD to make it feel oh so fast.

I need more power! My AMD Phenom II X2 555 needs more than just the Radeon 3000 integrated graphics on the motherboard. I want to play games and experience double digit frame rates.
  • SinxarKnights - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I am using a Phenom II X4 820, 4GB RAM and a HD4870 512MB card ATM. However I want this card for my mother as the R7 250 is a significant downgrade from a HD4870. She is using an older Dell PC (an old C2D + 4 GB RAM) and the graphics card has failed (it was a Nvidia 7600GS). Now she is using an old 5200FX that can't keep up with browser games. The issue is there is no PCIe power connector on the PSU. This card would fit this role nicely, it doesn't need much power and it would allow her to play her slightly more demanding games again.

I'm building my first computer ever in the next month or so. I plan to get an A8-7600 when they are released. I already bought a 1080p monitor and I think running an R7 250 in Dual Graphics with the A8-7600 would make gaming at 1080p a lot more enjoyable and still not consume a lot of power. The computer I use now is a Compaq laptop from 2004 with 1 core(AMD!!) and 1GB of ram, so to say I'm looking forward to building my new PC would be an understatement.
  • Donniesito - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I could really use *any* upgrade at this point. My desktop is still an old AMD Phenom X3 64. 4 GB of RAM with a Radeon HD6570. Been saving up for a long time to build a new rig -- but only being able to find part time jobs, I'm barely making ends meet. Any upgrade (especially free) is a wonderful thing.

My desktop has a PhenomII X2 550 cpu, 4GB RAM, and a Radeon HD 4670 GPU. The setup is getting a bit old, but it is still capable of keeping up with my schoolwork. One problem I have with the 4670 is that it no longer receives driver updates, and that means living with legacy Windows 8 support. I have considered upgrading my GPU, or even building a whole new system, but I decided against it in order to reduce the amount of loans I need for college

  • flyinfinni - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I'm currently running a fairly high powered main rig with an AMD Radeon 7950 and Intel i7-3820 on an EVGA x79 SLI board. The reason I'd like a R7 250 is that I don't always need this amount of power and I want to convert my storage server into a capable, low-power storage server/HTPC that can handle my media needs without having to power up my main rig. I'm currently using an old WiFi enabled blu-ray player for my media center, but it has an absolutely horrible interface and very bad/limited apps for internet streaming and I need to replace it. With some minor tweaks and a decent graphics card (R7 250!) I could set up a great little HTPC to handle all of my needs.

Same comment as the last giveaway:

I bought an FM2+ motherboard and a cheap non-APU Richland processor (Athlon X2 370) several months ago for a machine that is mostly desktop use, with occasional light gaming. My intention was to put a Kaveri APU in when they came out, but now I'm trying to decide whether that really makes sense or not. Dual crossfire is definitely a consideration, but I’m a little uncertain where I want to go at this point.

Currently this box has two video cards, a 6770 and a 5450, driving 3X 1920x1200 24" monitors. The plan is to put the 6770 into my 6 year old son's AM3 machine that used to occupy this desk (Phenom II 555BE, 3rd core unlocked, slight overclock, old HD4000 series video card that used to be where the 5450 was before the drivers were moved to legacy status and things got borked), and buy an A10-7850K and give the dual crossfire a whirl. It would probably meet my needs for this box, but I’m just having trouble convincing myself.

Oh, I own about 5000 shares of AMD stock that I refuse to take the loss on, if someone wants to add that to the consideration list of why I should win something nice from AMD. :)

Currently I have a QX6700 with an 8600GTS which functions as a workstation/gaming machine. Since I mostly use my current computer as a workstation, I've not had a great need to upgrade. As games have evolved though, my 8600GTS has started to fall behind with my occasionally gaming, disappointing me in my adventures with Marvel's Lego Super Heros game.

The R7 250 is a large improvement from the 8600GTS, more power efficient than and supports Photoshop's 3D requirements. The R7 250 would satisfy my desire for a more power efficient system,a better gaming experience and accessing all the 3D rendering features of Photoshop.

    My Current Setup:

    CPU: Core i5-3550
    MoBo: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
    RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600
    SSD: 120GB OCZ Agility3
    HDD: 2TB WD Green
    PSU: Thermaltake 750W TR2
    Case: Cooler Master Elite 430
GPU: Nivida Quadro 4500 (that should be enough reason right there)

I mainly use my machine right now for work, video editing, and general use. I'd really like to get back into some PC gaming. Never done much with Steam, but wouldn't mind giving it a shot. Been doing console gaming for years, and while I will not drop that habit, I now have more time to get into other forms of gaming.

My current GPU is OK for daily tasks, but even my Windows 7 screensaver has FPS problems when running dual monitors. Speaking of monitors, I'd love to add a third monitor, and this GPU would allow that with Eyefinity.

    Crossing my fingers for this!

I'm in the Steam Steaming Beta, but so far all I've been able to test that there is a minimum hardware required to decode the video stream and that minimum is not inclusive of the earlier series Inspire One netbooks. A new and free R7 750 could provide the incentive I need to put together that HTPC/Steaming box for the living room enabling me to experience the same gaming quality I get from the desk in my office on my sofa in the family room without having to have a midsized gaming case on display.
  • makerofthegames - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

This wouldn't be good for myself, but I've been plotting a build for relatives that might be perfect for this.

They're currently on a Phenom II X3 and a Radeon 4830 (Sapphire Graphics, I think, but I might be confusing that with other cards I've owned), shoved in a cheap case that's literally falling apart a bit. The thing still has a floppy drive in it, so obviously it's kind of old.

They don't do heavy gaming, but they do do a fair bit of gaming on it, mainly Civilization (4+5) and Battlefield 2. The 4830 works fine for that, but they're also planning to move on up from the XGA monitor (1024x768!) up to a new 1080p one, so a bit more horsepower would help, as would getting it in a smaller, quieter package.

The upgrade was planned to be an i3 and a 750 Ti (plus new case, more RAM and an SSD), but I'm still trying to get the price down. A 250 would do that, particularly if it were free.

  • campbbri - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I'd like to evaluate the R7 250 as a cheap upgrade to the i7 4770K integrated graphics in the desktop I'm building.

Idle power and noise are important to me since I leave the computer on 24/7. I'm curious to see if AMD's ZeroCore technology makes it so that adding the card doesn't pose a power penalty or add additional noise to the system when idle.

If that's the case, then the R7 250 would be a simple upgrade from integrated graphics, with no drawbacks.

Last year I built a modest computer for my mother. It is a Trinity A-10 5800K with 8GB of RAM and a small 120SSD. I felt that the graphical power within the A-10 would be sufficient for her needs. She does love her computer, but she does tell me that she'd like to get a larger monitor, and I believe the extra horsepower from the R7 250 would fit her needs while still staying within the power envelope of the 350W power supply.

The R7 250 would be perfect as I've recently rebuilt my HTPC, a lovely little m-itx A10-7850k, picoPSU, and small SSD inside of a classic NES console. I previously had a low powered E-350 in there, which was just a bit too slow and decided to go as far as possible in the other direction and recreate it as something that would have reasonable gaming performance while still be constrained to the thermal envelope inside of the old NES.

The 7850k has reasonable performance, but I'd like to get a bit more out of the system. A crossfire R7 250 would hopefully push the system up to ps4/xbox one gaming performance, which would be a delight.

I'd love to document and benchmark the evolution of the NES PC for AMD and this site.

My current computer is a Dell Dimension 4600. From 2003. I got married in 2005, had my first child soon after, and just had to give up on any hopes of ever upgrading, being a poor new father. Finally, 11 years later, I have a good job and $1000 saved up to build my battlestation. Being in IT, I need to be able to run a couple virtual machines as well as having decent video editing capabilities (for personal hobbies), but the secret plan is to finally be able to play all those games I missed out on! I'm still building out the specs, but an R7 250 may not get me future-proofed, it will let me finally hit all the great things I've missed out on while saving a few extra bucks (even if I end up buying it myself) for diapers and clothing (3 children now and starting the adoption process for #4 soon).

I recently sold my xbox 360 and built a mini ITX system (Z87 platform). It would be nice to add a R7 250 to it to see how it stacked up as a steam box vs a 360 on the big screen.

I have an i5-3570 right now, but with a piddly old 5570 in it for graphics. So I could sorely use an upgrade. Kerbal Space Program runs great on my machine, but I'd really love to be able to turn up the graphics a little bit more and the R7 250 would be perfect for a lightweight, but much more powerful graphics card than what I am packing right now!

My family has an old Dell system lying around that would really benefit from this card. It was a pretty typical budget system from the mid-2000s that we picked up to replace an old AMD system with a 700MHz Athlon. For a time, I used the system for gaming, and then, as they tend to do over time, the system just became too slow without the proper graphical support. The CPU is a Brisbane AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ at 1.9GHz. The graphics are in the form of an integrated nvidia GeForce 6150 located on the generic Dell GeForce chipset motherboard. Because of the integrated graphics, I upgraded the RAM to 3GB from 2GB to give the system some extra memory to play with. The system has a 160GB HDD for storage and a DVD-Burner for an optical drive. The power supply is whatever generic PSU that Dell just threw in there, so I know that while it can't handle a whole heck of a lot of power draw, it should be able to handle the R7 250 just fine. Not only that, but I know for a fact that the PCIe x16 slot on the board is free. If this card were added to be used instead of the on-board graphics, I have a feeling that the system would be able to play much newer titles without looking like a slideshow and would likely extend its life.

At the moment, if I were to be selected for receiving this card, I would use the newly-upgraded system to try some of the newer games out there and also perhaps see if I can't figure out how to try my hand at attempting to mine Bitcoins. At the very least, it might prove to be an interesting experience! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to try for one of these cards!

P.S.: I'd also be happy to review the card as I experience it.

I don't really have a current system. I am looking into putting together a system for a HTPC, this card would be perfect for what I have in mind.
  • Stabgotham - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I would love to have this inside my box. My current video card, while still capable, is getting somewhat long in the tooth. It's really apparent in the last games (e.g. Arkham Origins, Titanfall, Borderlands 2, etc.). I would absolutely love to return to playing games with all of the eye candy turned on. My current configuration is:

    ASUS P8Z68-V
    Core i5 2500K (OC'd to 4.7)
    Corsair H60
    Corsair TX750M
    Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 (2 x 4GB)
    ASUS GTX 560Ti TOP

With all that said, I'm certain there are more deserving people here who are (trying) to play current gen games with less capable setups, who not have the means to upgrade themselves ($$$). You should give them the card before considering me. Have a great day!
  • mangust - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

My current HTPC, using a Pentium D and an older Radeon card, does fine at 720p, but struggles with 1080p content. I believe an upgraded video card would make this system work well, but just haven't had the budget to buy anything. I would like to see how quiet the fan on this card is, to see if it would be suitable for an HTPC environment. I live on a fairly busy street, so unless it is obnoxious, it probably would be good.

I avoid upgrading to maintain my productivity to be honest. This card would let me lower the power consumption significantly and keep this computer in service for a few more years (and maybe even attempt to play a circa 2012 game or two).

LOL at all the people completely ignoring the entry requirements.

I need one of these. I have a small PC that is in use as an HTPC. Just a small unit with a Core2 duo and 4GB of RAM. I HAD a Radeon 5670 in it but that failed, so I'm back to the onboard GeForce 9300. The HDMI output from that has a significant delay on the audio. It is essentially useless. I can't do any gaming and forget about BluRay playback. The Radeon R7 250 would make this machine useful again. I could do some light gaming as well as all of my other HTPC needs that are currently unavailable.

I would love to have this card so I could put it in a computer that I am helping a kid build. We have managed to salvage a decent bit of parts from friends and family and have a computer that is running a quad-core AMD processor, 8GB of ram, a 600W cpu, and a 100GB hard drive. Not the best specs, but all of the parts have been donated and the kid doesn't have any money, so it will make him a great first computer. With this graphics card he would have a system that would actually allow him to game. As it is I can either buy him a bigger hard drive or a graphics card. If I win this I could give it to him and get him a bigger hard drive. It would be great to know I helped a kid achieve his current dream by winning this.
  • takeshi7 - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

My current PC still uses all the parts I got in 2007. It has the 8800 GTS 640MB, and the G80 chip doesn't have h.264 acceleration (I would have held out for the G92 based 8800GT if I had a future telling device). My CPU isn't powerful enough on its own to play 1080p YouTube videos without skipping frames. Also I own Battlefield 3, but even on lowest settings @720p it's slow enough that I can't possibly be competitive. If I had an AMD Radeon R7 250 it would fix both of these problems.

Basically play StarCraft II on it and hopefully some coin mining. It has to be better than the 640 for mining. The 640 gets around 60-70 Khash/s with Cudaminer 02-28-2014. The board is Crossfire capable and maybe I'll throw another R series card in there too. Core i3 540 on an MSI H55M-ED (or P) with 8GB or RAM. The first generation Core series IGP is garbage - maybe I could OC it for Mahjong.

A little over a year ago, the motherboard of my main rig (an OLDer HP tower desktop) decided to fry up a little breakfast one morning. Since that time I've stayed connected pretty darn comfortably with a Samsung QX410J notebook I purchased to fill the void.

I'm a 50 something who (after being invited to reacquaint himself with the care-free whimsy of a single lifestyle) decided to also reacquaint my youthful affection for really cool tech. In the process of stoking the embers of fascination, I decided that it was high time I plan my 1st home-build; a process still underway.

Somehow I was never seduced by gaming in any really significant sense, but thanks to a bit of available leisure time, the encouragement of my 18 year old son & some very well written gaming reviews, I confess to being intrigued by certain titles represented as standing somewhat apart from much of the genre; Fez, the Bioshock entries, L.A. Noire, Going Home, The Stanley Parable & the Portal episodes (of course) among any number of others. And from what I've seen presented as game-play previews, Watch Dogs holds the promise of being pretty tasty, as well.

I could & I would certainly use one of the cards on offer, but I'm not pressed by need. I'd welcome the opportunity to put such a card in service, but I'd be delighted to see it go to an ardent games fan who is, perhaps, a bit more pinched than am I. If the alternative appears to be a heinous troll given to disparagement of our fellow man ... well then in all good conscience, I'm Your Choice!

I upgraded it a couple of years ago to an AMD Phenom II 945 processor, and maxed out the ram, but it's still on an elderly Asus motherboard with Nvidia 6150 integrated graphics. I could get another year or two out of this if the graphics were better. Her games are mostly online Facebook and other lower-end games, but they've started taxing the limits of the system.

My HTPC in the living room is an old salvaged Dell workstation with a Pentium 4 Prescott and a Nvidia 8800 GTX. I wish I could afford to replace the entire system. A modern graphics card would would be a decent start. The stock Dell case is not well ventilated and the CPU runs hot. Having the 8800 GTX in the case only makes things worse. We have pets and live in a dusty environment so I have to clean the case and heat sinks at least twice a month to keep the CPU from overheating and throttling. A more efficient graphics card could help mitigate the heat buildup in the case.

    *Copied from previous giveaway*
For a long time, I'd been using a repurposed, full tower gaming machine as my HTPC. I was really itchin to do a Mini ITX build, but was waiting for Kaveri to hit the market. I honestly haven't been as excited for a processor release since Sledgehammer. The combination of HSA and GCN 1.1 sounded completely revolutionary to me. I ended up buying the A10 7850K as soon as Micro Center got them in stock and built my dream HTPC around the Cooler Master Elite 130. I wanted a low power, compact system that could handle all sorts of media playback, including Blu-ray, and also be able to do some light gaming. I'm completely satisfied with the IGP's performance, but the addition of an R7 250 would extend the gaming performance even further, while still keeping power consumption relatively low. The only thing that confuses me though is that Oland is based on GCN 1.0, unlike Kaveri. Does that mean I'd lose True Audio when running Crossfire? Wouldn't Bonaire be a better match since its the same architecture and supports XDMA? I really wish there was more extensive information about Dual Graphics.
  • invinciblegod - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

My current PC setup is a small computer I made using an Ivy Bridge Celeron chip on a mini-ITX board that cost $50 from Foxconn. These are stuffed into a Bitfenix chassis with a salvaged 2.5” hdd. This replaced my old Asus G50 gaming laptop which throttled any time I wanted to play a game and finally died last year, most likely because of the heat. This computer works fine for most basic tasks. However, playing any modern game on this is a chore. Everything is extremely slow as I found out. This was not the original plan.
Gaming has always been something I loved. Back in my high school days, I saved up money to get an AIW 9800 Pro. It was a revelation. When before I could barely play any game, I was now able to play Warcraft 3 at maximum settings. Never before has any game shown so much detail, so much design, so much energy. Not only that, I chose that video card because of all the bonus features it offered such as TV recording and video input. My gaming habits only grew from there. In college, I met with many people who share the same passion for games as I do. We regularly play various games together then. Games such as World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3, Left 4 Dead, and Diablo II. Even now, we still play those games together. I can even play decently! Or I should say I could since the low frame rates make any semblance of skill a coincidence.
The original plan was to buy a brand new gaming notebook of the Razer variety. This would future proof me for any games that my friends and I will move on to. Unfortunately, the money set aside for this had to be used for an unforeseen expense. The expense was entirely my fault but nevertheless, with my laptop on its last legs I needed a new computer, for without one, I would be unable to work. As for why I didn’t get another laptop, the price along would have prevented it. Instead, I just decided to use what little budget I had on a cheap computer that I can at least conceivably upgrade in the future. And upgrading it is needed for my friends are now moving beyond Left 4 Dead and World of Warcraft for newer better games that will never be able to play on integrated graphics. Games like the wonderful mechs of Titanfall or the majestic locales of Final Fantasy XIV. So please, I ask you to send me the R250 so that I can continue my adventures with my friends in the newest locales we can venture.

I promise not to use this new card for mining crypto-currency, if that helps :)

I hope to get into coin mining. My current system config is an i5-3570K with 16gb RAM and a MSI Z77 mobo with a SSD and two HDDs for storage. Nothing too tricked out, but just powerful enough for a mining machine. I had an Nvidia, but sold it because I heard it wasn't good for mining and that I don't game that much anymore. I've heard that AMD cards are very good for mining, thus I would like to get one.

I currently have an FX-6100 with a GeForce GT 640 and I could really use the boost from an R7 250. I occasionally game (FPS/RTS) and do some desktop publishing/Office. I would like to keep my system all AMD.
  • goddjob - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

While my own rig may not benefit from this card (I run a 7950), my parents are running a prebuilt from 2005. With this card, I could make them a very nice micro-atx or even mini-itx build, made possible by the R7 250's compact frame. The R7 250 is powerful enough to handle new games now, and will likely still be good for general use for the next 8-10 years; a great combination for a build likely to not move in that span.

My PC is fine, but my (8-year-old) little brother needs a boost for smooth Minecraft gameplay. His computer is a 4-year-old Dell with a Core 2 Duo, 2 GB of DDR2, and onboard Nvidia graphics. The power supply does not have a 6-pin PCI-E connector, so a good card that can get its power from the motherboard would be ideal. The R7 250 would fit the bill nicely.
  • manicbass138 - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

Will use this to replace older video card in a workstation. 1st Gen i7 system works fine, but ca use a boost in the graphics dept.
  • TrackSmart - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

Some commenters have older, but SIMILARLY POWERFUL GPUs already -- but are under the mistaken impression that this card will bring a huge performance boost for gaming. It won't. But it will use less energy.

This is not a high-performance gaming GPU. It is a power efficient, affordable, mid-level part. It would be great for an HTPC or similar low-power build. It has adequate power for gaming at moderate detail levels, which is fine by me. I personally try to build fairly power-efficient machines, because I want low power usage for everyday tasks (95% of what I do) and have modest expectations for GPU intensive tasks (only occasional gaming -- usually playing top-tier games from a few years ago as they go on sale on STEAM).
  • ascian5 - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

I need one for a central family PC in the living room. HTPC, gaming, and children's activities. The wife is too intimidated by gaming desktop and it's obviously hand off for toddlers. Would love to create an atmosphere to educate my family together, dip my toes in the emerging mini-itx market/SFF, and as any parent will tell you, any financial aid is a godsend. Thank you for the opportunity.

This sounds like a great match for my newest build: An A10-7850K is just prime to test dual-graphics with a discrete chip, and it just arrived in the mail! I was planning on not using the integrated graphics but instead replace it with a discrete GC completely, but if can get similar performance w/dual graphics, the better!

  • Ryard - Thursday, March 6, 2014 - link

Actually, this wouldn't be for me but for my brother who is still running a AMD 4850. I can't even compare the benchmarks for that to the R7 250 side by side in Anandtech's Bench because it's not listed even in GPU 2012, only the 4870 is available. But even then, the benchmarks have all changed. He's still a poor grad student in the process of getting his PhD so he could really use the upgrade. His Phenom II X4 is holding up well but when we co-op on Steam, he's starting to run into his video card limits. If I win it for him, I'll be sure to get him to do a review of it.

    but only by a hair.

For this replacment: I'll either slap on Windoze 8 or some Linux Distro with 'reasonable enough' repository #years lifespan for updates depending on cost factors.....this video card helping to lower the cost!

I teach 3D CAD to middle school students. My current Dell Optiplex 7010 is using a Radeon 6670. Four of my students' computers have Radeon 6570s, but most (20) of my students' computers are currently using built-in graphics. I'm always looking for inexpensive low-power graphics cards to improve the 3D performance. The R7 250 is ideal since it doesn't require a power connector and provides a nice upgrade over built-in graphics. I'm sure the Minecrafters in my class would enjoy, as well.

I've been trying to save money for a new build forever. This gpu would be a great start. My current system is:

I7 920 cooled by a cheap 92mm CPU air cooler

    Intel dx58so

    2 amd 5770

    Samsung 256GB 830 series ssd

    3TB in hdd storage

    750w ultra psu

All in a cooler master 690 case

Definitely starting to show it's age, especially in terms of power efficiency.
I would probably use this 250 in a sff htpc/steam box and slowly upgrade my current system while using it as a personal server to try out the new steamos game streaming. I would probably get a Kaveri CPU as well to test out the crossfire with the integrated. I've had a seasonic gold rated psu and 16 gig ddr3 kit for over a year now in anticipation of a new build.

Thanks for this opportunity Anand and AMD

My current system is a 4th Gen i5, 16 GB ram, Asus Z87 Mobo and an AMD HD 4650. My videocard is what needs upgraded most (over 5 years old). I would really like to move up to the 256 bit interface cards like the HD 7850, but Id be satisfied with the R7 250 if I got it. The price is half what the older 7850's are, and have less than half the performance. But the R7 250 still kicks the snot out of the old 4650. I use my system for CAD and rendering, a more powerful card would encourage me to look into ways to push this work to my GPU. If I got this card, Id want to do some research and benchmarks on the rendering capabilities of it.

    - 990FX chipset
    - 8GB DDR3 1600
    - Radeon HD 4670
    - Two 1080p IPS monitors

I'm a web developer by trade, so my current GPU is okay for most day-to-day tasks. There are two areas, however, where more GPU compute power would make a big difference:

    1. I do occasional 3D scene rendering with open source tools including Blender and LuxRender. Anyone who's read a recent AnandTech GPU review knows AMD's GCN architecture excels at LuxRender. The R7 250 would be a major boost in this department. Most of my render jobs are simple scenes, so the 1GB VRAM is not a limitation in my case.

    2. Gaming. I don't play many cutting-edge titles, but Civ V, Torchlight II, and Skyrim would be a lot more playable with the new card. I would love to experiment with multi-monitor gaming as well, which would be too much for my current GPU.

Thanks for putting on this contest! Looking forward to writing my review.

My rig is pretty new and has an Intel Core i5 6470k, 8 GB of RAM, an SSD, and a GTX 760. I took some older computer parts though that still have some life in them (Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 and 4 GB DDR2 RAM) and put them together for a friend who's starting some dabbling into the PC gaming arena and this R7 250 would definitely be a cut above the old Radeon HD4670 I put in there. Would love to win one of these.

I have a 13 year old brother in law who has only gamed on consoles and a budget laptop with integrated graphics. He wants to get his first real gaming computer but has an understandably tight budget. If I won this, I'd help him build his first gaming rig with an AMD A10-7850K in Crossfire to get him started gaming on his 1280 x 1024 monitor. If he's really bitten by the PC bug, he can save up for a beefier card (probably a R9 270X) and this card will make its way into a home brew steam box.

I'm currently running an older system with the first gen Core i5 and an AMD 5770. Lately I've been thinking about putting it in the living room to hook up to my TV, but to get the temperatures to something I'm comfortable with, especially in the 90 degree summers, I have some fans in it that aren't super loud, but are noticeable. If I win the R7 250 it will probably drop the heat in this system which would let me use some quieter fans that won't need as much airflow. I would mostly use it to watch videos and some light gaming (currently can't stop playing Spelunky) so GPU power won't need to be that high.

I have integrated graphics, but the rest of my PC has been upgraded with what you'd expect of a PC enthusiast; unlocked i5, 20GB RAM, SSD, TB's of space, quiet PC case. My graphics are the last thing I need to have a truly great PC. It is what is holding me back. Even normal desktop operations are hindered with IG. I'm preaching to the choir so I don't need to go into detail about the limits of IG.

This Radeon would allow me to play the latest games at respectable resolutions and frame rates, while also delving into the realm of mining crypto-currencies. I've been in the nVidia camp for some time and would like to see what AMD brings to the table. Winning this contest would help my productivity, my fun, possibly my bank account, and help me become a more well-rounded PC enthusiast.

I have a third computer set up in the house for when a friend comes over to game. Currently it is running an A10-5800K APU and 8GB DDR3-1866 RAM. The APU can handle a lot of the lower-end games, but for stuff like World of Tanks it gets a bit sluggish. An R7-250 would give a benchmarkable boost. I think it's compatible with hybrid Crossfire as well, I'd like to see how the GPUs handle that.

I would also be happy to test the card against my Sapphire R9-290, but I think the 290 has a slight advantage.

I do a good bit of gaming on it. I would like to win the R7 250 because my current card burns quite a bit of energy and only supports DirectX 10.1.
  • db4williams - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

I currently have a Core2Duo (E8400) based machine running an Nvidia 8600 GTS. This used to be a Dell PC but a year ago it crapped its pants and the motherboard went bad. So, I found a decent MSI motherboard on ebay, took the remaining parts out of the Dell box and put all the component in an old Antec enclosure. I think this is still a viable machine. But needless to say the graphics card on this machine is outdated by several generations. Not only that, the card is LOUD! This machine is used by several members of my family to do homework, watch YouTube and play some games, namely Minecraft and some browser-based games. I think this card would be a nice upgrade for this PC considering its age.

AMD provides a great value and that's important for those of us who's spending priorities place the needs of the family before the needs of the gamer (me). So when I look at making a hardware purchase I don't have the luxury of going for top-of-the-line products as they fall way outside my budgetary constraints. I'm left trying to find the best bang-for-the-buck at that particular moment in time. That is why I'm an AnandTech reader and it's also why I'm an AMD customer.

My current setup is an AMD Athlon II X4 645 with 8GB of slow DDR2 memory and a few SSDs that I picked up when they were on sale. My current video card is a Radeon HD 6950 that worked fine on my old 1680x1050 displays but it is starting to sweat driving my newer 1080p displays. Even though I'm a Dad with kids I'm still a kid at heart and game one night a week with the same group of guys that I gamed with when I was in my 20s playing Doom and Duke Nukem over IPX on a 10Base2 network setup in the bachelor pad. We even have a few LAN parties every year for old times sake.

An AMD R7 250 would fit the bill in the GPU line of succession and allow me to put the trusty HD 6950 into my son's system... because at some point he will get tired of Minecraft and want to play a DX or OpenGL game. An R7 250 might allow for a more enjoyable BF4 experience when compared to the 6950 that I use today, which is important in the frame rate sensitive world of the 1st person shooter. What better reason could one find for wanting a R7 250 than a better frame rate for fagging your friends?

    Current rig: i5-2500k w/ Thermalright Ultra 120, Gigabyte Z77 UD5, 8GB Mushkin DDR3-1600, Kingston V+100 96GB SSD, ATI Radeon 3850
I used to run the above with an nVidia 460 GTX 1GB but a recent driver SNAFU bricked it (half a year after the 3-year warranty expired) and forced me to fall back on the 3850, originally planned for a driver-mod OpenGL CAD workstation.

I need the R7 250 to be able to record my gaming replays on high enough graphics quality for youtube viewers. While I tend to play and record games without massive GPU requirements, the (awesome for it's age) 3850 is just not enough anymore.

Here's an example of my work:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llmMxFXEqsU

I believe in building gaming rigs with high-quality high-value parts - paying a bit extra to be able to overclock and upgrade as required. I would love to see how the R7 250 can perform with popular online games that use older engines like DotA2, World of Tanks replays, and others.
Would love to provide a detailed video review. Thank you for the consideration!

I'm really looking to make the step up to a discrete card and would be perfectly happy with low settings/low resolution performance, which would already be a big step up from being unable to play much of anything with the integrated graphics present in my current setup. So, as much as anyone can "need" a GPU--I need (and would greatly appreciate!) this!

Given, they're the integrated graphics from an A10-7850k, but since it's powering a 1080p monitor, I don't often get the graphical quality I'd like when gaming. Winning an R7 250 would not only give me a chance to benefit from the card itself, but also a chance to benefit from dual graphics.

  • TStokes - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

My current setup consists of a four year old laptop and a five year old workstation with a workstation graphics card. The workstation graphics card is great for Solidworks, but useless for games. I can't switch to a gaming card, because that would impact my CAD programs. So my only choice for playing games is to build another computer. I'm not thrilled to build a third computer just to play games, so I'm doing my best to keep the cost to an absolute minimum. The R7 250 looks to offer a lot of performance for the price, so it would be a perfect fit for my budget entertainment rig.

I am by no means the most power hungry pc user, and i mostly use my computer for watching, editing pictures and video, as well as media browsing and light gaming.

even the r7 250 would be a step up for me as i amcurrently using integrated graphics.
  • elessar25 - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

This GPU would be a miracle for me! I definitely need it. Here's my setup:

    Sandy Bridge i5-2500K
8GB RAM, 128GB Vertex 3 SSD, 1 TB Samsung HDD.

Here's the deal. When I built that system 2 years ago, I was both employed and also not into gaming. Now I'm unemployed and cannot afford a GPU. I have Battlefield 3 and I would love to own the Radeon R7 250 to play it right!

    Thanks AnandTech!

  • ninjagrips - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

Could still use one of these in my new HTPC build. Currently running an old 8800gt, it's way loud and outdated. Looking to quiet the system and play games with details high as possible at 720p.
  • ultimatek - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

Well my current PC specs are:
CPU : Intel Dual Core E7200
    RAM: 4GB 1333(OC)
GPU: Intel X4500(Current), HD3850(old gpu, broken)
    MB: Asrock G41
OS: Windows 7/XP 64 (Dual OS)

The reason i would like to win this card is, mine broke a year ago. I was using an ATI Radeon HD3850. I miss playing Crysis, Crysis Wars, Word in Conflict and The Witcher. I used to play these at 1440 resolution or lower if needed on medium/high settings. The AMD R7 250 seems to be a good card to replace the HD3850 and put me back on gaming. The R7 250 may considered low profile, but it packs a lot of power against the HD3850. The AMD R7 250 surely will revive my gaming rig and for the better, it will enable my rig to newer games.

  • Shinobisan - Friday, March 7, 2014 - link

My wife's computer currently uses a Radeon 6750 and an i5-2400 processor.
I have the 'itch' to build a machine again... and I'm starting to work through what it would take to build her a mini-ITX system. Right now her machine is in a full sized tower which sits on top of her desk ... looking rather odd. My plan is to build a good 'desktop' unit in a small chassis.

She uses her machine for everything from surfing to MS office to Photoshop and Light-room.
The machine would be used for editing photos, drawing original art, coloring comic pages, ...

That's the plan. An R7 250 would put me well on the way for the project.

I have two systems this would be good in. One has a i5-3570K CPU and I am using the built in HD4000 graphics of the CPU. I would like to try out some of the new games and while the HD4000 is fine for the lighter stuff it just can't handle what this can.

The other system is my HTPC that also uses HD4000 only graphics. I would love to see some games on that 60" screen I just got and it would be great for my 3d movies.

    AMD FX 8350
    16GB DDR3 1600
    Biostar TA-970
    Nvidia GTX 470

I would love to win for three reasons:

    1) My previous experience with multi-GPU (SLI) was TERRIBLE, and I am ready for these three AMD cards to reset my expectations.
    2) I want to witness the difference that crossfire and Mantle make on Battlefield 4 performance in my system
    3) My church has a machine that could really benefit from my old GTX 470, so I am looking for a way to upgrade mine and waterfall it to that machine.

I could really put one of these cards to use. I've got a Core2duo system with an aging 8800gt right now. While I still play games its much more casual then when I was younger, as I just don't get as much time. As a result I would love to get a nice midrange modern card for lower power and still good capabilities to play games.

A10-7850K, 8GB of DDR3 @2400 Mhz, Seagate ST2000VX000 2TB HDD (May switch to their Hybrid Drive, reviews aren't stating much of a difference between the two since this hdd seems to function significantly more quickly than others at the same rpm level).

I use this machine for playing video games, ripping dvd's and streaming them. The games that I play are at all levels. From Rogue Legacy to the Witcher 2 and Metro I'm playing them on Ubuntu. I mostly play native titles but I am no stranger to WINE. I'd like to use this gpu to boost performance of my system, based upon benches it seems like crossfiring will come close to doubling frames in games. I'd love to do that.

I'm currently attempting to overhaul my (very old) gaming rig. It's based on an AM3 Asus M4A78LT-M LE, an Athlon II X2, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and an HD 5670 from Sapphire, all of which I got from Cyberpower PC a while back.

Plainly said, most anything would be an upgrade for me at this point, and I am on a very shoestring budget. I've got very little income, and what's there goes to paying for my computer science degree.

Ultimately, I'd use it to play some games in my downtime, relieve some stress from the college grind, and free up a little cash so that I can upgrade my core components sometime down the road, which would allow me to more easily tackle some of the larger programming projects on the not-to-distant horizon.

I am always willing to opine about a product though, and would definitely be willing to give more than a "paragraph or two" about the R7 250 if I won.

Here's to hoping for a (very) late Santa this year!

I'm trying to revamp an old computer I built from 2008. I recently upgraded the processor from a core 2 duo e4500 to a core 2 quad q9300 and doubled the ram from from 2gb to 4gb (ddr2 800). I'm trying to find a graphics card that would allow it to play games made in the last couple of years. It's currently running a Radeon hd 2600 xt that has served me well, but just can't keep up anymore. One of the most appealing things about the R7 250 is its low power consumption to performance ratio. I could pick up an older used card that would roughly be as fast as the R7 250, but it would use much more power. The power supply in the PC now is seven years old and only 450 watts. I'm afraid that if it gets overloaded, it could fail spectacularly. I'm looking forward to being able to play games like Battlefield 4 and Planetside 2 on the machine along with a few other releases. It blows my mind that I should be able to convert an old PC into a modern gaming PC for under $100.

It is currently running windows XP.

I am going to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on a newer, bigger harddrive, and I think upgrading to the R7 250 at the same time would make it be just like a brand new computer for her. I bet it is quieter and uses less power than the 4670, which are both huge pluses.

I am interested in this card to test its compute ability. Not Bitcoin / Litecoin / etc. but instead would like to see how it does in various BOINC projects and Folding@home. While a lower power card will not put out as many points as a higher end card, often it can give better points per Watt of power consumed.

I have PC hardware ranging from Pentium 4 era equipment up to an LGA 1366 SR-2 dual socket machine, as well as an i7 4770k, so I could test the card in several different configurations to see where it may bottleneck.

Current system is an aged QX6700 workhorse with a Radeon 5670 HD. The system still works well, but it shows its age for a lot of programs, especially graphics intensive applications like games. I use the system mostly for day-to-use, some video and picture editing, and occasional gaming. Part of the reason I don't play more PC games is because of the cost of continuously upgrading hardware to keep up with the latest software. Right now I play Rome 2 on pretty much its lowest settings. It'd be nice to upgrade this aspect of my system.

I had an HD 6850 for a couple years now and the fan had been getting loud for a few months about the same time I lost my job. One day the fan got really loud and the temperature shot up to 100+C. I turned off the computer for a few minutes and it wouldn't boot up again, I tried turning the fan by hand and it has a LOT of resistance now.

I am now using my back up 6570, I had to cut my game image settings by a lot, mostly only Blizzard games but I can't live without my second monitor watching youtube and movies at the same time. While the R7 250 won't have as much power as my 6850 I would like something a bit more powerful than my 6570 to get me by for a while. Thank you.

I play Diablo3 and Neverwinter online. None of them are very demanding and I have 1680x1050 resolution monitor. I think for a low power low cost build, this card would serve me fine coupled with an Intel i5 Haswell and 8 GB ram. Go AMD!
  • BigBenn1 - Sunday, March 9, 2014 - link

Crap, skimmed through the rules and missed on what I should comment!!!!!!!
So I'd like to win the card for my little bro, who currently runs an Intel Pentium G820 (I know it's awful), and an NVidia GT 240, which is also awful. He's a big F2P gamer and as of now, the GT 240 just isn't strong enough to push the 60 FPS standard at 720p with modestly awful settings. Reading reviews on the R7 250, it seems very capable to push many games, especially past titles with great settings at 720, or even modest settings at 1080. That alone is a huge reason as to why I need to win it for him.

It's a bit difficult to find R7 250 benchmarks of a multitude of games, but using the GPU-z database for some technical numbers, the R7 250 is theoretically 2-3x faster or better in every possible area! It has 3x more floating point performance, which can go such a long way in his 720p F2P games!

I’m really sorry about double posting, I should have read the rules instead of skimmed through the paragraphs, I hope this won’t disqualify me! It’s for my bro after all.

I have a mini ITX kaveri (7850k) build. It is my only computer and get used for work, games, general browsing and entertainment. I am a graduate student. This graphics card will help improve the frame rates for my gaming use while having a minimum power budget suitable for a small case and SFX power supply.

This is off topic, Can you include the AMD Kaveri processors in the CPU Bench section ? Also can you include integrated graphics performance in the Graphics Bench section ? I do understand that all tests may not be same/applicable but even a few things to compare would be good. Its hard to go between several articles for comparison.

The other thing is there are reports on Kaveri APU forums that when the GPU and CPU is simultaneously loaded the CPU portion downclocks to 3 Ghz. Can you verify this behavior ? and if its due to the APU itself or BIOS issues ? Any direct information from AMD would be really helpful as well.

My last discrete graphics card died in Nov of 2012. I recently built a new system with a 4770k, Gigabyte UD5H, and G.Skill RAM; and I have been playing games using the intel HD graphics 4600 (which has been miserable). I have been weighing the pros and cons between the variety of GPUs on the market, and had strongly considered the newer AMDs for the cost to performance they offered. Yet, the prices on their higher end cards have increased (I guess due to the bitcoin-mining trend). I had previously owned Nvidia GPUs in SLI but my experience with them was just so-so (I had to RMA them several times, which was mildly perturbing). I want something that is reliable and will last me a long time and I'd like to find a company that reciprocates loyalty.

I'd really like to get back to some quality gaming and would love the opportunity to try out a card from AMD. I have always been a frequent gamer and I have been itching to getting back in the fold.

Thanks to AMD for the giveaway!

I'm a casual gamer and currently running a Radeon HD 4850 which is getting dated and tough to run current titles plus is not energy efficient compared to the new value cards being released. I built my current system about 2 years ago. Previous to that I had been using a Dell Inspiron 8600 for the past 8 years. I wanted to play Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and frankly it was time to upgrade! I've got an ASUS P8Z68-V LX socketed with a Core i5-2500K running with 8GB of DDR3-1600. Everything else is fairly standard; 500 GB WD at 5400 RPM, a DVD-RW drive, a 650 W Cooler Master PSU, a Cooler Master CPU fan and two vanity LED chassis fans for the case. I skipped on the video card since I was very budget conscious at the time and after doing some research, I was confident the 2500K paired with the 8GB of performance RAM could handle almost every new game under medium settings until I had the time and money to get a video card. This was an accurate analysis; new games run very well and I never felt the need to get a video card. Ironically, it's the older games that do not! Over the past 5 months, my roommate and I got back into playing Day of Defeat 1.3. While the game is mostly playable, my system will churn and the FPS will drop to <7 when there is some serious action or someone throws a smoke bomb. I've tired all sorts of resolution tweaks and console commands to adjust the graphics settings, but I still cannot improve the system performance! I need this video card to improve my Day of Defeat FPS! Also, there's a trade-off involved; my girlfriend tolerates my DoD habit as long as I take her out to brunch twice a month, and the money that would be put away for a video card must be out towards brunch.

Other than gaming, I use this system to run some Free/OpenBSD virtual machines, where I test kernel builds and just play around with different software packages.

Honestly, I wouldn't personally use the graphics card because the one I have at home is better.

However, I am in a PC Hardware course at my college, and every semester the class builds a PC system. I've been pushing for a 7850k+R7 250 dual graphics system for a while now, and if I was selected to receive one, I would give to to the class to use in the building of the system so we could allocate more funds to other aspects (faster RAM, mostly, because that's supposed to matter with APUs). I want to see how far a dual graphics setup can be pushed, and I think it'd be a real interesting learning experience for the class. If verification would be needed, I would be willing to go through the steps needed.

I am a developer and work in IT, so I use my computer for a lot of things. It is my DVR, gaming machine, remote connection to employer, MineCraft server, and I watch TV and movies from it. This machine is getting long in the tooth, and the motherboard (Intel) particularly is a real buggy mess.

My current PC setup is an Intel Core series Q8300 with 8GB of DDR2-800 RAM. I have an AMD HD7970 GPU that I bought so I can play Battlefield 4. Even with that newer card Battlefield was a little slow, so I bought an SSD to load the game onto, and that helped a bit.

I heard about and read up on the AMD Mantle project and was excited about it when the Frostbite 3 engine came out. But I couldn't wait to play so I upgraded what I could. I'd love to have an AMD R7-250 for Mantle and whatever speed increase I can gain from it.

The integrated graphics (intel HD 2500) are capable of providing smooth 1080p video playback, but can't really keep up with gaming. It would be great to add a discrete graphics card that could handle some light gaming, e.g. FIFA or Rayman, as I have a couple Logitech wireless controllers that I can hook up to the HTPC. Also, its a MicoATX case so the small size would go well.

I'd be using this card to upgrade my father's computer. He has an old Athlon X2 5800 with 4 GB ram and an ancient Radeon x1900Pro. He loves to watch HD videos on youtube and share them with anyone he can show them to, but it's painful for me to see the chop that happens sometimes during playback. He deserves better but will never spend enough on himself for a new card.

I hope to win this awesome prize. I wish to build a core i3 haswell mini-itx HTPC for gaming and light graphics work. I do 3d vector graphics design and like to sometimes use Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw. I already purchased a cooler master elite 130 and bought a Corsair HAF case with 140mm exhaust fans. I am hoping to run some water cooling and decided to go with a Silverstone TD03

My old computer getting very old, I recently put together a new system, with an ASRock Z87M Extreme4, Intel i5-4670 and 8 GB of RAM. However, I didn't have the money for a discrete graphics card, so I am using the HD 4600 graphics until I can afford a card. I play games, and needless to say, I am playing a lot of older games and games on low-quality settings and non-ideal resolutions. This card would be a major upgrade from the HD 4600 and greatly improve the range of games I can play and the experience I have with them.

My current PC is an almost 3-year old HP (Core i5, 8 GB RAM) with integrated graphics on the CPU. I've been running Manjaro Linux on it and the graphics can barely maintain a playable frame rate in Minecraft. I've had great luck using ATI cards with Linux at work, so I'd love to get one of the R7 250's so I can finally have decent graphics on my home system.

    Current set up:
    AMD Athlon X6 1090T - 6 cores at 3.2ghz
    6GB's of Patriot Memory
    AMD Radeon 5700 Graphics Card
OCZ Vertex 2 SSD + WD 1GB Standard HD
    Windows 8.1

I'm looking for something that can accelerate video encode conversions, accelerate 3d apps, and web applications, as well as some light gaming. This card looks like a perfect upgrade from my current Radeon 5700 GPU which is starting to chug a little and offers little in the way of OpenCL acceleration.
  • Myxx - Tuesday, March 11, 2014 - link

Current setup is using a very dated card, while the rest of the system isn't that old. A new graphics card would be just what I need to get a lot more out of it.

This weekend we are building my best friend his first gaming desktop. We've been cutting corners because he has little money, so I'm trying to give him any parts I can harvest or get cheaply. This is the setup we will have. Getting a free GPU would be a great addition, right now we are going to crossfire some really old extra cards I have.

AMD FX-8320 (got it on sale w/mobo, hoping to use it with better components later)
    Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
    4gb DDR3 ram
    DVD-RW drive
    2x XFX Radeon 5670s
    500w PSU
    Windows 8.1

He used to play MMOs and would like to get into them again, as well as maybe test the waters with a few FPSes.

    My Current System Specs
    Cpu: AMD Phenom II X4 910 @ 2.6 Ghz
    Gpu: Radeon 6670
    Ram: 8GB @ 1333Mhz
    Os: Win 7
    Mobo: Foxconn A88gmx
Boot Drive: Samsung 840 evo 120GB
    Storage: 2 WD Green 1TB
    Case: HP Pavilion Elite e9120y
    PSU: 400 Watt
    Monitor: 1680x1050p @ 60Hz

    Explanation for Current Setup
This used to be an older HP computer running on a Radeon 4350. That was, until the motherboard burnt out on me and I decided to buy a new motherboard and a few other parts to breathe in new life, such as the 6670. This was my first time doing something remotely to PC Building so I had to do extensive research to make sure what I was doing was right. Even then, that wasn’t enough because I later realized that I needed to have a fresh copy of windows 7,(all I had was an upgrade disc from vista to 7) that’s where the second WD Green comes in, so I wouldn’t lose anything on the first drive. I later added the 840 evo when I learned what it could do for my PC.

Why the R7 250 Would Be Great for Me
Getting a R7 250 would be another breath of life again to this Frankenstein of a PC and would improve my video gaming experience. The main games I play right now are Dota 2 and Planetside 2. Other games I play from time to time are: Left for Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Battlefield 3, XCom: EU, and Civ 5. I play Dota 2 on max settings and it runs at ~50fps, until team fights start happening and it starts dropping to ~25fps. While, Planetside 2 is set to the medium preset and runs at ~45fps and gets ~25fps, sometimes lower if there’s a 100+ fight going on. If I were to get a R7 250, I would be able to run my games at faster frame rates or turn up the graphics settings and see an even better world.

P.S Is it okay for my dad to accept the prize, I already have his consent to enter, because I’m 17? Otherwise please disregard this and sorry for wasting your time.

I built my first PC in the past year. Wanting to know what I was getting into, I bought my first discrete graphics card, HD 6570 with GDDR3, for a 4ish year-old Asus desktop with a Pentium E5300 processor, Asus mobo and 6 GB of DDR2 RAM. I decided I would build a new computer but ended up doing it in phases. I upgraded the CPU to a Core2 Duo E8400 and the PSU and bought an Asus HD 7850. It was definitely an improvement, but the 7850 was under-utilized by the Core2 processor. (Now I have an FX 6300 running two 7850s, the other is an MSI). I would like to see how this card, with its faster clocks and memory, runs with the Core2 Duo compared to the HD 6570.

They poured through the felled castle walls; waves of dragonknights and nightblades leading the charge to take our flag. I valiantly tried defending the keep by laying down a wall of fire to burn the dozens of Ebonheart scum to ash and send their spirits packing back to their own lands. However, nothing happened, no wall of flame, no milk-drinking Nords or Dark Elf curs being incinerated, just lag... and my own death.

It was this experience that led me on a journey to find that my poor GeForce GT220 card did not even meet the minimum requirements for the Elder Scrolls Online beta play. Alas, I am in need of a new card to play the game when it comes out next month.

I currently have an HP P6530F with an upgraded 450W PSU. It's not a very beefy system, but I'm on a limited budget at the moment. Winning this card will put new life into my legacy system and allow me to play the game while I slowly upgrade everything else around it. I NEED this card.

    > What I'm looking for here is an understanding of what your current system configuration is, why the Radeon R7 250 matters you and how you'd use it.

Currently using iGPU in a Sandy Bridge and ASUS board w/8GB RAM. The system runs mostly audio software and some video transcoding, and leisurely tasks include a fair amount of video playback and a few not-so-modern games. On the latter two, a discrete graphics adapter would be measurably notable, and likely the transcoding might get a boost.

The Elder Scroll Series is my favorite. With Skyrim out and Dragon Age 3 on the way. Well my card might be able to play at the extreme low end. Also I would like to be able to build mods for Skyrim. So my video card is the bottleneck for sure, especially when trying to play games like Microsoft Flight Simulator X Gold, Battlefield 3 and 4, and many other great games, that don't get the graphic processing power their engine deserve. ;-) Therefore, I have a hope to contribute with my experience if I am so lucky to win one. I'm planning on using this card to upgrade my son's computer. He's only 5 and not at a stage where he cares about having the top of the top graphics so a top shelf system isn't worth the expense, however a smooth gameplay matters a great deal to him, I routinely hear him complain when slowdowns appear.

His computer proficiency is amazing for his age and ahead of where I was at twice his age, yet the concept of turning down a device when not in use still seems beyond his grasp. Power savings become very important to me due to his computer being not only left on all day every day, but usually left running a game.

The Radeon R7 250 seems to be by far the best shot at achieving the power/watt ratio I'm looking for and should make my son very happy.

In December I built a FM2+ based HTPC / Steam Machine with a Trinity APU so that I could later drop in a Kaveri and R7 card for a gaming boost when I needed it. Well, I could use one now! I would love to have an R7 because I really need the impetus to upgrade my (admittedly fine for now) Trinity to the top end Kaveri. I would love a reason to spend my money and try out the fixed Dual Graphics combo!

Currently running a Phenom X2 unlocked to 4 cores on a motherboard with integrated 890 graphics which is pretty much butchering my gaming performance. So much so, that I've underclocked to 2Ghz@0.9375 volts to reduce power consumption to well below sub 50W without losing any significant performance in the games I play. The sad part is this CPU is rock stable at 4GHz (albeit at a power draw of over 150W) so it just seems like wasted potential. In fact this R7-250 would be the best card I can run on my rig with this older power supply without PCI-E power connectors.

Overall, with an AMD R7 250 in my system, I'll save money from reduced power consumption, while still enjoying solid gaming performance.

My current PC is a HP 6200 Pro that's about 3 years old. It has a Core i5-2400, 8 gigs of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. Because it was originally intended as an office machine, it has a OEM-style AMD Radeon HD 6570. I alternate between using Windows 7 Professional and various Linux distros (Manjaro, Arch, Debian, Ubuntu) on this machine. Having an R7-250 would make a huge improvement to my graphics performance. From all of the reviews and specs I've read, the R7-250 should vastly outperform my current card, while consuming around the same amount of power. My HD6570 sometimes struggles even with things as simple as Minecraft, so a R7-250 would make a gigantic difference in my frame rates. And, because the R7-250 is so efficient, I wouldn't feel bad leaving my PC running all night if I wanted to mine crypto coins!

I do all of the work for him for free as far as setup, building, etc. etc., but his budget is tight enough to where he is getting a part a month at best. At this time, he has a i5 4670k I believe, a gigabyte MB, 8 gigs of black mamba 1866, a 120GB SSD acting as his system with a couple games on it and an older Seagate acting as a data drive. Right now he is running an older radeon 5750 that I had outgrown and gave to him to fill in the slot until he gets something better. He is a volunteer fireman in his area and works for a well known department store that does not want to pay much to their employees... and that is pretty much all there is to do where he works. Rough life lol
