Any word on the camera sensor size, or which sensor they used?
  • JoshHo - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Nothing official but it's possible to infer that this is a 1/2.3" sensor size with 1.1 micron pixels and a Sony design win.

    > One possible issue I noticed with Motorola's listed specifications is in the network section which classifies the device as supporting category 4 LTE. This may be referring to Verizon's network certification, but the Droid Turbo should be rated for category 6 LTE.

Are you sure, Josh? Here is the Motorola - not the Verizon - listing:

    "LTE Cat 4 (Bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13)

    Carrier Aggregation (B4+13)"

I know! Here is my status:
love this phone for above reasons - check
verizon is my carrier - check
    contract is up - check
will it make it on to the approved list at work so I can actually get it? - maybe, hope so!

5.2" screen with QHD? I admit I love the specs, but with my eyesight slipping I only look at phones with 5.5+ inch screens these days. When Apple launched the retina display all they did is start some kind of arms race for all the Android phone makers.
  • dyc4ha - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Nexus 6? I'm not too sure what you mean by the arms race though
  • Impulses - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Everyone keeps aiming for higher and higher dpi... Not sure what eyesight has to do with it tho, mobile OS scale everything pretty well so on Sven elements retain a pretty constant size.
  • Ratman6161 - Thursday, October 30, 2014 - link

"Arms race" doesn't make any sense. What they were doing was a "catch up" more than anything else when it comes to screen size. That said, 50+ year old bad eyes and I still find a phone this size to be at the very limit in terms of how big I would go. Any bigger and I may as well be carrying my 8.4" tablet around.
  • evefavretto - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Actually, it might go to the Australia.
There is quite a lot of evidence of an international launch, but with the Moto Maxx name.
Brazilian tech press got invites that show a part of the back, and it's just like the black Turbo.
And both the device and the battery passed already through Anatel(sort of like brazilian FCC).
And one of the invited blogs mention a global launch.

It's how I felt about the DROID RAZR MAXX HD when it never came to Europe. So I imported one.

I had to have the giant battery.
  • cmdrdredd - Tuesday, October 28, 2014 - link

Too bad it's verizon only. This looks like a sweet phone just based on specs.
  • dragonsqrrl - Tuesday, October 28, 2014 - link

Sooo, why didn't they put a larger battery in the new Moto X?
  • T1beriu - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Because they would have lost the curved back.
  • dragonsqrrl - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

I don't think that's true. The curved body wasn't a huge limiting factor for battery capacity in the first gen Moto X where they used a stacked battery to take better advantage of internal space. I can't find a teardown of the new Moto X, but considering it has a significantly larger footprint than the original, but still comes with practically the same sized battery (2300 vs 2200 mAh)... ya, I don't think the curved back excuse holds up.
  • pmcorriveau - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

I was very disappointed by the 2014 Moto X, and would love a review of this phone to see if any of the shortcomings with that phone have been addressed here. LOVE my Droid Maxx and how this is my next phone!

Any confirmation for QI charging? The "leaked" user manual states wireless charging but would like some official confirmation.
  • jmunjr - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

It really is a shame a phone with these specs can't be made in a smaller size, ~4.7" or smaller, preferably about 4.3"-4.5". Yeah battery life probably could not be matched but they could get close.

For some reason people want bigger screens. I have terrible eyesight and don't want a bigger phone. I enjoy using my phone with one hand. I don't get the fascination with big screens, well at least the overwhelming attraction to them. Perhaps the phone makers/carriers are dictating the market rather than the customers...
  • Impulses - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

You should look at the Sony Z3 Compact, it's exactly what you want... No Qi charging tho. If it had Qi and/or was a little cheaper I'd probably be considering a switch away from Sprint and my Nexus 5 (it's only sold direct right now, for Tmo/AT&T).
  • sonicmerlin - Thursday, October 30, 2014 - link

4.7" is too big. Need 4.3".
  • Gunbuster - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Any word on this getting Android L? Going by Verizon's track record they will update it sometime in 2016...
  • jonny13 - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Everyone loves to bash Verizon on updates, but the 2013 Droid line has beaten the Moto X to a couple of updates, so Verizon/Motorola are good about updates. Can't speak for the rest of Verizon's lineup though.
  • nicolapeluchetti - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Any chances to see this in europe?
  • nfriedly - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

Anyone know what it will cost off contract?

(It looks like a spiffy phone, but not spiffy enough to give up my unlimited data for ;)
  • Beany2013 - Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - link

I see no sign of an impeller or compressor. Or an exhaust for that matter. Not even a turbo button to push it from 25mhz to 33mhz.

    Bloody sales and marketing people...
  • Notmyusualid - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

Indeed it is a sh1te name to choose.

But with a batter that size, and as long as it ain't heavy, I might pick one up when state-side this month. My GS5 is not making it through a day of heavy use, and if Skype is left on with normal use, it likely won't make it to the next morning.

Wireless charging is an essential feature in 2015, failure to add it would be suicidal for this product.
  • Notmyusualid - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

Sorry, I can see it IS indeed heavy... hmm I dunno.

Guess I'll pop into Fry's and see it in real life then. Its going to feel like a laptop in the pocket I'm expecting...
  • jvl - Thursday, October 30, 2014 - link

    I hate the buttons :>

Other than that, I only hate they didn't put enough of an effort into the Moto X...

"Droid" may be "exclusive" to Verizon, but the same model under a different name often shows up at other carriers. So big deal.

"Droid Turbo" will be called the "Moto X Play" for AT&T.

Droid Turbo (Verizon: FCC ID IHDT56PK1)
    Moto X Play (AT&T: FCC ID IHDT56PK2 )

Has AT&T bands, and the official statements say the new device "is electrically equivalent to the certified device carrying FCC ID IHDT56PK1."

What I'm REALLY waiting for is a "Pure Edition" of the "Moto X Play" -- like Motorola has done for the 2014 Moto X. No carrier branding, no bloatware, unlockable bootloader
  • Notmyusualid - Saturday, November 1, 2014 - link

"No carrier branding, no bloatware, unlockable bootloader".... could you send that message to Samsung?

I bought my GS5 cash, no branding, no carrier, straight up 1st day out cash purchase, and it still required rooting, and I cannot update my OS, not EVER, as I have an 'unsupported os', or some error message like that.

Worse still, Cyangenmod went commerecial, and even if I jumped through hoops to load a version os CM, it doesn't support Touch Wiz, so no fingerprint reader etc.

    Sh1te all over.

All marketing people should be drawn & quartered. Bill Hicks agreed. Look it up.

"Motorola has not stated the voltage of the battery" do you actually get paid to write these articles? arnt you supposed to have a basic understanding of electronics to be writing them in the first place? lithium ion nominal cell voltage is 3.7v. If you were to use 2 in the configuration to extend capacity (parallel) it would still be 3.7v.

if it uses lithium ion and its a phone, its going to be 3.7 volts. Unless they are unveiling a new tech or special anode/cathode which 1) is unlikely 2) the phone with the higher mah is listed as being slightly thicker which suggests a larger lithium ion cell. 3) if they were using new tech they would likely brag about for marketing, "hey new supper good bat tech!" instead of the usual mAh rating

I dont know why you would even question the voltage.

Motorola has clearly been sabotaged by Verizon industrial sales management. Restricting its best phones to limited distribution and just one carrier is the only explanation as to why Motorola choses to limit its sales of its best technologies to just one carrier. Years in the red is clear evidence of industrial sabotage. With a chance to take a lead in battery life, Motorola has once again chosen to "sell less, make le$$".
